The Politics of Character

History also teaches that nations rise or decline according to the character of those entrusted with leadership. Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once observed that “The price of greatness is responsibility.” Responsibility is not inherited, it is cultivated. This is why societies cannot merely produce educated citizens, they must intentionally produce principled leaders.

Political leadership without moral formation becomes dangerous, business leadership without integrity becomes exploitative, and spiritual leadership without humility becomes abusive.

The Foundation Phase exists to prevent gifted people from becoming destructive people.

What does your organisation produce in people?

EAP is part of the solution. It cannot be the entire solution.

Many organisations respond to burnout by offering:
• wellness days;
• resilience training;
• mindfulness;
• counselling;
• EAP;
• employee wellbeing campaigns.

These can be valuable.

But if leadership behaviours, workload design, incentives and organisational culture continue producing chronic exhaustion, the organisation is treating the symptoms while preserving the system.

Thought-Leader Question

When an organisation repeatedly produces burnout, should we keep asking employees to become more resilient, or should we start examining the system producing the exhaustion?

Why?

Because intelligence and emotional awareness alone do not create sustainable performance.

The missing dimension is what I call Transcendent Quotient (TQ)—the intelligence that integrates purpose, meaning, values, ethics, and identity into organisational performance.
