TIP: Add all the authors to the dictionary then they don't show up as red, and the text is neater. You simply go to the "Editor" function for spelling, the name will come up in red, and you click on "Add to Dictionary."

Because, unlike people, a book WILL be judged by its cover ... good luck with this time of the year!

TIP: Your proposal is in FUTURE tense - it is still going to happen: "The interviews will take place ..." vs your report on your findings is in PAST tense: "The interviews took place."

Dear students, AI is part of our lives now, and it can be your best friend or your biggest enemy. TIP: You are not allowed to let AI WRITE for you ... you can get ideas, you can copy and paste but in the end you will have to take that text and re-write it and make it your own. It is your work and your voice. And the day you get that degree, you can be proud of yourself, for these very reasons.

REFERENCING ... Yes, it can be daunting. But it doesn't have to be. TIP: Keep every single source from the start, and download the proper citation, which will (where applicable) include the URL and/or DOI address. And make sure from the start what you have to use: Harvard, APA, etc.

And if you don't know, ASK ... you have supervisors, the internet, and colleagues. You can also ask me on this page. That way, the question as well as the answer may help another student. 💯

Tip nr 2 for academic writing: Create a STYLE SHEET, or you could call it a "pattern" or "design". Just imagine you are sewing a shirt, or making a table out of wood, you would never do it without a pattern. Example: 1) Line spacing throughout the document - decide, then check at the end. 2) Table headings at the top, figure headings underneath, then check at the end.

If the institution provides style guides, even better. Always ask for it and make sure you check the requirements. Your writing will immediately be more professional.

Let's address challenge nr 1. Many students feel anxious and alone, long nights working on their assignments, theses and dissertations. The editor is often asked to assist only at a late stage before they have to submit; so, at this point it becomes a partnership and a relationship built on trust. And the joy when a student passes and does really well is immense.

TIP NR 1 ON ACADEMIC WRITING:
It is formal but not fancy. It is not Shakespeare but also not TikTok! Cut the slang but don't sweat, write in a clear and concise manner, it's enough.

To be part of a student's academic journey is a responsibility but also a PRIVILEGE, and I take it very seriously. There is a person with challenges behind that document that we as editors work with. NEVER FORGET THAT.
