Today is Day 1 of the GIIN conference in Amsterdam, and we look forward to engaging with fellow changemakers and gaining meaningful insights.

Sipho is from Umzimkhulu, a small town in KwaZulu Natal. With a background in Economics, Sipho joined Knowledge Pele as a Research Intern in 2018. He was then offered a permanent role as a Junior Research Analyst. Oratilwe, originally from Rustenburg, North West, brought her background and expertise in Public Relations, Communications, and Learning and Development to Knowledge Pele when she joined us in 2019 as a Learning and Development Practitioner. Kopano also known as “Sis Kops/ Kops” was born and bred in Brits, in North West Province. She joined Pele in 2015 as a Cleaner. She soon got involved in tasks that would allow her to grow by providing administrative assistance to the KP staff and also enrolled for a short course in Professional Communication and Office Management, which led to her promotion to Office Manager and later to Group Office Manager. Kopano found herself back at KP as the Executive Assistant for Fumani Mthembu, then MD of KP. Her determination to acquire new skills have led her to join the Economic Development Team as a Junior ED Manager. Kops’s journey truly is an impressive one!

At Knowledge Pele, our mission supports the aspirations of a wide range of partners and clients. In converting Research into actionable and investable plans, our Advisory team designs and manages Economic Development plans. Our Advisory work includes the establishment and management of community trusts that participate in the ownership of infrastructure and industrial assets. As Advisors, our work is geared towards compliance, ensuring that there is a clear audit trail linking community investments to community benefit. Without evidence, impact cannot be proven. The first step to all community development work is Research. The Knowledge Pele team has extensive experience, collecting data across South Africa’s rural, peri-urban and township communities. Knowledge Pele is charged with raising social investment capital, beyond the budgets availed through the State’s procurement programme. We do this because the targets of the National Development Plan require more capital than any one project can provide. We have thus enjoyed successful partnerships with Investec, the Industrial Development Corporation and Coldplay, which have enabled us to scale our work in communities. In particular, these partners have availed risk capital for investing in new industries as well as upskilling the community to participate gainfully in these new industries. We are strong believers in partnerships and have a proven track record of impact to back up our belief in what is possible when we work together.

Knowledge Pele is a direct expression of the freedom to reimagine and rebuild our society, a right enshrined in our Constitution. KP’s work reimagines township, peri-urban and rural communities. We are committed to undoing the historical legacy of these communities serving as labour reserves. Instead, KP works to reconstruct these communities into thriving economic hubs.

This is why our development strategy culminates in community industrialisation. We are establishing and co-owing industries in these communities, so people can live and work in their communities of origin.

Why Is Knowledge Pele Proudly South African?
KP’s Bursary programme targets students from communities that host renewable energy assets. We also deliver accredited training for the development of renewable energy artisans. We are proud to have supported the journeys of over 150 students over the course of our 15 year-journey. Education is a shared priority that requires both funding and technical support from all sectors. Our ambition is to build a community college in all our host communities to build the next generation of artisans for South Africa.
