Let me share the background with you...

You see, over the past 5 incredible years, since establishing The Human Element (Pty) Ltd's HR Consulting division, we've navigated more than possibly 100 IR issues, from minor misconduct to complex cases.

Today, I'm over the moon to announce a momentous achievement: we've maintained a 0% CCMA referral rate! ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ’ช

Last week, we faced our first CCMA referral, as an employee claimed inadequate remuneration post-contract.

How do you make sure you build a team of people you can trust, who are aligned to the culture you are creating and who are so passionate about what your business stands for, that they actually want to help you succeed?

This is one of the most challenging parts of building a business that our clients face.

So what does it take to get this right?

1. Know what you want and what problem you want the person to solve in your business. Don't just fill a position for the sake of it. Be intentional.

2. Know the skills, experience, personal attributes and behaviours you want someone to possess when they come into the role. Then use this information to attract the right candidate. Sometimes people say, "I will know the right person when I see them". How will you know when you dont know what you want to begin with?

3. Create a structured onboarding process that will allow you to set them up for success. You can't expect someone to read your mind - tell them what you expect when they join, train them on your systems / processes and then give them an opportunity to do the work while checking in to make sure they are doing it well.

4. Manage their probation period. I cant tell you how this simple process is the most overlooked. You cant tell someone only at the end of their probation they are not performing. What have you done to set them up for success - they can't read your mind! Oh and be honest - tell the employee they are not meeting the performance standards during probation and show them how to improve. Avoiding the difficult conversation will not make the problem go away.

One of the things we love doing is coaching our clients to create an environment within which their people thrive and their business grows.

It's not easy to develop empowering habits but it's so worth it.

The biggest challenge high-performance Founders have is poor performing staff!

It's no secret that every business owner wants to employ skilled people who will go above and beyond to serve their clients and perform the job to the best of their ability because this means the business will grow.

What happens when the employees are not performing well, customer service standards are low and clients decide to terminate their services?

Avoid this from the start by hiring the right employee because bad hires are COSTLY!

How can you improve the success of your hiring efforts?

1. Know what you want and the gap the person will fill once hired. It's not enough to say you need an Administrator - you need to know what tasks this person will be doing, and how will their role contribute to the success of your business.

2. What skills and / or experience do they need. Now that you know what you want, what skills / experience should they have that will convince you that they are someone to consider?

3. Determine where you will find them. You know what you want, you know the skills / experience needed - now where is the best place to advertise that will attract the best candidates? Post the vacancy there.

4. Create the advert. Using all the information you've put together, create an advert that will attract the right person, with the right skills and experience to your vacancy advert.

5. Screen CV's based on your requirements.

6. Schedule interviews. Ask competency based questions that will allow you to determine the candidates experience, their competencies and whether their values are aligned to the company culture.

7. Offer the most suitable candidate the role. Dont rush the hiring process because hiring the wrong person is extremely costly.

When you have a trusted HR partner onboard, you do not have to worry about the administration of hiring a new employee.

We would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year.

2020 presented many challenges for us all on a Global scale - from mental health, financial and even workplace issues.

We've also seen that many people have been able to overcome these challenges.

As you plan to celebrate Christmas Day with loved ones and think about goals for 2021, here are some tips for you to have a peaceful, joyful time and focus in wellbeing:

1. Practice an attitude of gratitude. You may not always have what you want however there is always something to be grateful for.

2. Be conscious of what you consume - both mentally and with the food you eat. Feed your body and mind good, nurturing food and thoughts because it has the potential to change your state of being.

3. Respond rather than react to situations.

4. Take some time to practice saelf-care. The value of taking care of yourself during this period can be challenging - however it is important to make it a priority to prioritise yourself.

5. Have fun!

This year we had the privilege of working with some of South Africa's greatest entrepreneurial talents in the food and beverage industry through a food business acceleration called Wakanda NPC.

Besides providing HR services to the entrepreneurs, our greatest joy was meeting these passionate individuals.

Helping them implement HR practices allowed them to work on building their business while we took care of supporting them with people issues.

Meet one of those amazing entrepreneurs sinenhlanhla ndlela, founder of Yococo.

Sine Ndlela started this fun trip of Yococo in 2016 in her apartment, with the help of a few strangers from the building elevator who dared to come taste the ice cream in its infancy.

She wanted to create something that will be completely vegan friendly and have a strong intention of love - the ingredients had to be meaningful which is why they were chosen based on the 7 chakras and colour therapy. The packaging is also environmentally friendly and fun!

Her mission: To serve love through scoops!
