As with children, same with adults. Stimulate the heart, body & brain for life-long learning.
Join the Revolution - We're Transforming Education
At the deepest level, we all want our children to be happy in their daily living, and happy with themselves. This requires that they take an ACTIVE part, living in the REAL world, DOING REAL STUFF that INTERESTS them.
Revolutionary teachers do not ask -
“How will we fit in maths and science if they spend the whole morning on their hip hop choreography?” (or play writing, or animation, or … ) Nor do they worry that they will not ‘get through' all the subjects in the day, or fear that the “children will get behind”. Behind what? One quick look at these teacher concerns reveals that ‘the system’ is more important to the teacher than both the children and their learning.
The Revolutionary Teacher understands children and learning:
• Children thrive when they do what interests them.
• No one wants to stop work when they are in the middle of something that they love.
• When you are doing something you love learning is effortless.
• When you are doing something you love, you find out what you need to know so you can keep on doing it.
* The Revolutionary Teacher remembers that systems are set up to serve people, not the other way around.
• The Revolutionary Teacher cultivates a culture of Compassion, Cooperation, Empathy and Community.
Professor Welby Ings is an internationally recognised award winning teacher, professor of art and design at AUT, film director and author of “Disobedient Teaching”. His brilliant presentation to the NZEI Conference in 2017 looks at the making of a Revolutionary Teacher and what that looks like in education.
