What I love about South African design is that it doesn’t need to shout about where it comes from. You feel it.

It’s in the hand of the maker, the imperfect surface, the woven fibre, the colour, the artwork and the way familiar materials are used in completely unexpected ways. Travel teaches you to appreciate beautiful spaces everywhere, but it also makes you recognise how distinctive our own design language is — layered, expressive, tactile and deeply human.

For us at Proportion, that’s where a space becomes memorable. Not because everything matches, but because every piece has a reason to be there. Art, craft, material and architecture coming together to tell a story that could only belong here.

You know when a space feels like it has something to say?

That’s what we were chasing here. The warmth of the timber Oggie | European Oak Flooring , the handmade ceramic details by Kalki Ceramics , the bold colour furniture DOKTER AND MISSES Laurie Wiid van Heerden , the artwork by The Keiskamma Art Project and the layers of texture by PINDA and all this comes together to tell a distinctly South African story — contemporary, expressive and full of character.

For us, good design isn’t about filling a room with beautiful things. It’s about choosing the right pieces that belong together, support local creativity and make the space feel memorable.

What we love about this moment is how nothing is trying too hard, yet everything has something to say.

The tile detail pattern, woven pieces, colour, texture and light all sit together in a way that feels familiar — there’s a warmth and honesty to it that feels distinctly South African. Not in an obvious or literal way, but through craft, material, hands and the stories behind each object.

For us at Proportion | Interior Architecture SA that’s where design becomes much more interesting. It’s not just about creating a beautiful space; it’s about bringing different creative voices together and allowing each one to contribute something meaningful to the final story.

Working alongside Kalki Ceramics , CLOUT/SA and executive creative director of CloutSA Tracy Lynch is a reminder of how important collaboration is. When designers, makers and artists come together, the result carries more depth, more character and a stronger sense of place.

From design details to good conversations, a few laughs and the SCAPE Awards of Excellence — a pretty good way to spend the day.

I love the serious side of design, but I love the people, energy and unexpected moments around it just as much.
