Protecting Yourself from Workplace Bullying
Workplace bullying isn’t always obvious. Sometimes it’s subtle—eye-rolls in meetings, being excluded from important emails, or repeated “jokes” at your expense.
But over time, it chips away at confidence, performance, and well-being.
✨ Here are some strategies to protect yourself:
🔹 Know the signs
Recognise when difficult behaviour crosses the line into bullying: repeated undermining, intimidation, exclusion, or humiliation.
🔹 Set clear boundaries
Practice assertive communication. A simple, calm “I don’t appreciate being spoken to that way” can send a strong message.
🔹 Document everything
Keep a record of incidents (dates, times, witnesses, exact words/actions). This creates a factual timeline if you need to escalate.
🔹 Seek allies
Confide in a trusted colleague, mentor, or HR representative. Isolation is the bully’s power; connection is yours.
🔹 Look after your well-being
Bullying impacts mental health. Access counseling support, use your EAP if available, and prioritize self-care practices that restore resilience.
🔹 Know your rights
Familiarize yourself with workplace policies and labour laws. Bullying is not a personality clash—it’s a violation of dignity.
🌱 Remember: Protecting yourself doesn’t mean fighting alone. Healthy workplaces create psychological safety where everyone can thrive.
