FRIDAY — CEO DECISION ROOM

Trying to appeal to everyone may feel like the safest way to grow.

But what if it’s the very thing making your business forgettable?

When your messaging is too broad, potential customers struggle to understand what makes you different, why they should choose you, and who you serve best.

Specificity changes that.

A clearly defined position helps the right prospects recognise your value, strengthens your reputation within your niche, and makes referrals easier because people know exactly who to send your way.

The goal isn’t to attract everyone. It’s to become the obvious choice for the customers who value what you do best.

Before your next positioning decision, ask yourself:

• Is our message specific enough to make the right customer feel

understood?

• What do we do exceptionally well that sets us apart?

• Are we staying broad because it’s strategic, or because narrowing feels risky?

BAAC Insight: A business known specifically within a defined niche can capture a stronger share of that market than a generalist trying to appeal to everyone.

Feature parity is a pricing problem, not a product problem.

Match a competitor feature, then another, and soon every product in the category looks the same. Buyers fall back on price, sales cycles stretch, discounting rises, and win rates slip, even though the product hasn't gotten worse.

The SaaS businesses that avoid this ask a different question: "What could we build that's genuinely hard to copy?" That might be a different technical approach, deeper domain expertise, or data and relationships built up over time.

Before your next roadmap session, ask: if our closest competitor matched every feature in two quarters, which ones would still justify our price?

Matching features was never the same as building differentiation.

Join Eliah Mutaviri as he unpacks what it really takes to keep your best people.

After 18 years in corporate, Eliah became a founder and hired his first person.

His experience made the work easy, but it was all instinct and none of it was written down.

Once he started hiring, he had to teach someone else what took him 18 years to learn.

That’s why he builds every system around one question: “If I knew what I know today, how would I approach this?”

In this episode, he explains why your strongest people are often the first to leave, how to spot the warning signs early, and what to ask them before a resignation letter does it for you.

🎙️ Episode 15 of The GrowthFormula™: Cloning Yourself Isnt a Sales Strategy drops Thursday at 12PM.

Ask most business owners what makes them different and the answer arrives within seconds: quality, service, experience, care.

That speed is the clue. Real differentiation took years to build, and it takes more than a few words to describe.

It usually lives in three places:

Specialisation: depth in one narrow niche, so the alternative is a worse specialist, not an equally good generalist.

Process: a genuinely different way of working, documented well enough to describe in detail.

Proof: evidence a sceptical prospect can verify, beyond a generic “great service, highly recommend”.

Run your own business through all three, honestly.

Find a real answer in even one and you have more differentiation than you realised.

Come up empty across all three and you’ve found exactly why you’ve been competing on price.

Comment "CATEGORY" and we’ll send you a clean sheet to rate yourself.

Most transport and logistics companies claim to be reliable, professional, and customer-focused. But when every competitor says the same thing, what actually sets your business apart?

The answer is proof.

A measurable on-time delivery rate, faster claim resolution, or real-time shipment tracking gives customers something concrete to evaluate — not just another promise.

Building this advantage requires two things: the systems to measure performance accurately and the confidence to share the results.

Before your next proposal or website update, replace one generic claim with a specific, verifiable number.

Reflection Questions
- Which of your marketing claims do competitors also use?
- Do you measure your actual performance?
- What evidence could make your business stand out?

BAAC Insight: A claim every competitor can make isn't a differentiator. It's the baseline expectation.

Your sales process isn’t a system if it only lives in your head.

Join Eliah, a 5x founder, as he shares why founders need SOPs before they need more people.

In the early days, the founder IS the sales process.

They know what to say, who to call and when to follow up.

It works because they’re the one doing it.

Then the first salesperson joins, and everything breaks.

They’re not bad at selling.

They were just never taught how the business sells, because nobody wrote it down.

A sales SOP should cover:

✅ How a lead is qualified

✅ What the first conversation covers

✅ How objections are handled

✅ When and how to follow up

✅ What “a closed deal” looks like

Write it down, then teach it.

That’s how a sales process stops being the founder and becomes the business.

This is just a snippet.

If a competitor copied everything you do, would customers notice the difference?

Imagine someone copied your website, your offering and your team's approach, then set up next door at exactly your price. Would customers see a meaningful difference, or would it come down to a coin flip?

Many owners go quiet at that question, because a business that can be fully copied doesn't have a position. It has a price. Prices get matched or undercut, so you end up competing on the one thing you never chose.

The businesses that avoid this have something a competitor can't copy by Tuesday: deep specialisation, a proven process, or a reputation built over years. "We're reliable" and "we care about quality" don't count, because every competitor says them too.

Run the test this week. If your answer is vague, that's not a failure. It's your starting point.

A business that can be fully copied by a competitor charging the same price doesn't have a position. It has a price.

Managing people is an ART, and the hardest part is noticing who’s about to walk away.

Most founders worry about losing their weakest performers.

It’s usually the wrong worry.

Your strongest people have the most options, the least patience for a stalled path, and the sharpest eye for being taken for granted. They rarely complain loudly. They raise something once or twice, then go quiet.

Founders read that quiet as contentment. Very often it’s the opposite.

The first signal usually comes 6 to 12 months before the resignation letter. That’s a wide window, if you know what to look for.

Episode 14 of The GrowthFormula™, “Top Talent, First Out the Door,” walks you through the Flight Risk Check. Five questions to run on your strongest people, ending with the one every founder should answer honestly:

If they resigned tomorrow, would you be surprised?

Your weakest performer leaving is a relief. Your strongest performer leaving is a warning you had time to hear.

Hiring another person may seem like the obvious solution when your team is overwhelmed. But have you considered whether the work actually requires another person?

Some tasks require human judgement, relationships and creative problem-solving. Others follow repetitive processes that could be automated at a fraction of the ongoing cost.

Before your next hire, break the role down task by task. You may find that automating the process first reduces the workload enough for your existing team to manage what remains.

The goal isn't to hire less. It's to make smarter decisions about where people create the most value.
