AN OLD MAN HELPED A POOR BOY WITH MATH — 11 YEARS LATER, THEY MET AGAIN IN A HOSPITAL
For years the old man occupied the same bench by the run-down neighborhood, quietly working through math problems in a tired notebook. One afternoon a shy boy stopped nearby, watching him closely.
"Do you like math?" the old man asked gently.
The boy hesitated. "I’m… trying. But I don’t understand it."
After that they began meeting nearly every evening. The old man explained things with patience, sketching numbers in the dust and smiling each time the boy solved something.
"You’re smarter than you think," he would say. "Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise."
Then, one day, the boy stopped coming.
Years went by.
Eleven years later the old man lay in a hospital bed, staring up at the ceiling, alone. His condition was worsening, and he understood it.
That evening a nurse came in with another patient.
"He’ll stay here for about an hour," she said. "We’re moving him to a VIP room soon."
The man in the second bed turned his head… and froze.
"So… you still like math?" he said quietly.
The old man’s eyes widened.
They recognized each other instantly.
They spoke for hours, catching up on everything life had taken and given. But then the old man smiled with sorrow.
"I don’t have money for treatment," he said. "So I won’t be here long… not in this world either."
The next morning he woke up alone.
A nurse walked in.
"Something strange happened," she said softly. "The man who was here yesterday asked me to give you this."
She placed a small bag on the table.
