Red soil, open skies and learning the Kukama way. ๐ŸŒฟ

Our students head into the bush to put their theory into practice, learning together in the field before ending the day with a spectacular sunset over the red earth.

Thereโ€™s just something about a Kukama sunset.

๐ŸŒฟ FROM STUDENTS TO FIELD GUIDES โ€” WHAT A JOURNEY. ๐Ÿพ

Completing the Kukama Nature Site Guide Course is more than simply reaching the end of a programme. It is the culmination of weeks of learning, early mornings, long days in the field, assessments, challenges, laughter, growth and unforgettable moments in the wild.

And when that final assessment is done, the emotions say it all. ๐ŸคŽ

For our students, this journey has been about far more than passing. It has been about discovering what they are capable of, building confidence in the field and turning a passion for nature into real knowledge and purpose.

An important part of that experience happens at Maloba Game Reserve, where our students are able to put what they have learned into practice in a real wildlife environment. From identifying species and reading the landscape to developing the practical skills needed as future field guides, these experiences are an invaluable part of their training.

A heartfelt thank you to Maloba Game Reserve for continuing to provide our students with such a meaningful place to learn, grow and experience the wild firsthand. ๐ŸŒฟ

Now, in their own wordsโ€ฆ this is what Kukama has meant to them. ๐Ÿพ

From FGASA NQF2 to the Wildlife Industry ๐ŸŒฟ

Doing your FGASA NQF2 does not mean you have to become a field guide.

It can be your stepping stone into a much bigger wildlife industry โ€” opening doors to different careers, experiences and opportunities.

Our student Brendon Barnard is putting his training into practice through an internship at Kalahari Wildlife Project, an animal rehabilitation centre in the Northern Cape.

This is exactly what we mean when we say Study with Purpose.

Your qualification is not necessarily the destination. It can be the key that opens the door. ๐ŸŒ

We are incredibly proud to see where Brendonโ€™s journey is taking him.

Brendon Barnard โ€” keep going, the wildlife industry has many paths to explore. ๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŒฟ WHAT A WELCOME TO KUKAMA! ๐Ÿพ

Our August students have officially arrived, and what better way to welcome them than with a very special introduction to Olienhout Game Reserve โ€” three beautiful Barn Owls taking the next step in their journey back into the wild. ๐Ÿฆ‰

At Kukama, our students donโ€™t just learn about wildlife from a classroom. They get to experience the realities of ethical wildlife management, conservation, and responsible field guiding right from the beginning of their journey.

Having completed their rehabilitation, these three Barn Owls have now moved into their soft-release enclosure, where they can become accustomed to their new surroundings and develop confidence in the area before taking the final step towards their release into the wild. ๐ŸŒฟ

A new group of students.
A new chapter for three owls.
And another meaningful wildlife moment at Olienhout Game Reserve.

Thank you to Kalahari Wildlife Project for the important work you do in giving wildlife a second chance.

And welcome to Kukama, Dithlalerwa โ€” your journey has begun! ๐Ÿพ

FROM TWO TEAMS TO ONE PACK ๐Ÿพ

And, as per Kukama tradition, the August intake had to face their first challenge โ€” a Potjiekos Competition! ๐Ÿฒ

The group was divided into two teams, each tasked with creating their own potjie. They were judged on food, flavour and presentation, bringing out a little friendly competition from the very start!

But the real goal was bigger than the competition. Once the pots were judged, the two teams came together as one group โ€” Dithlalerwa. ๐Ÿพ

Wild dogs are known for the strength of the pack, and this group has already embraced that idea.
Two teams. One pack. One journey ahead. ๐ŸŒฟ

We canโ€™t wait to see what this group achieves together!

WELCOME, DITHLALERWA!

Our August intake has officially arrived โ€” and this time, itโ€™s an all-boys club!

Meet Dithlalerwa, meaning Wild Dogs โ€” a name chosen because they believe in the strength of working together as a pack, supporting one another and striving for success.

Every group that arrives at Kukama brings its own unique energy, and WOWโ€ฆ this group has certainly arrived with plenty of it! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Weโ€™re excited to watch these strong individuals grow, learn and challenge themselves over the coming weeks as they work towards becoming professional, ethical and confident field guides.

The journey has begun. ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒฟ

Welcome to Kukama, Dithlalerwa. Letโ€™s see where this pack takes you!

A special milestone for Olienhout Game Reserve. As part of our ongoing rewilding journey, ostriches were introduced back onto the reserve. Kukama students had the opportunity to witness this moment first-hand โ€” not just learning about rewilding in the classroom, but experiencing the process of restoring a landscape and bringing wildlife back where it belongs.

This isn't just a game drive.

It's the moment where everything comes together.

This is JJ's practical assessmentโ€”a chance to demonstrate the skills, knowledge, professionalism, and confidence expected of a field guide.

Every explanation. Every decision. Every sighting. Every interaction.

This is what our students train for.
