Security in wind farm development should not start with a standard list of controls.

It should start with a site-specific Security Risk Assessment.
During the development phase, many security measures are already relevant: controlled access, landowner communication, contractor movement, theft prevention, community engagement, and clarity around who may enter a proposed project area.

These are all important. However, the key principle is that every wind farm site has a different security risk profile.

Landowner arrangements, access routes, local crime patterns, community dynamics, remote laydown areas, nearby infrastructure, environmental conditions and future construction logistics will differ from project to project.
That is why security actions should be informed by an evidence-based assessment before controls are finalised.

A development-phase Security Risk Assessment does not need to be complex or intrusive. It can provide a practical baseline that helps developers, landowners and future project partners understand what is appropriate, proportionate and realistic for that specific site.

During the development phase, many security considerations are already relevant: land access, perimeter exposure, community interface, contractor movement, theft risk, access roads, laydown areas, substations, grid connection infrastructure and clarity around who may enter a proposed project area.

These are all important. However, the key principle is that every solar project site has a different security risk profile.

A utility-scale solar PV project near an existing substation will not have the same exposure as a remote greenfields site with long access routes, scattered laydown areas, high-value equipment deliveries and community interface risks.

Local crime patterns, cable theft exposure, transformer and inverter protection, fencing requirements, access control, environmental conditions, logistics routes and future construction sequencing will differ from project to project.

That is why security actions should be informed by an evidence-based assessment before controls are finalised.

A development-phase Security Risk Assessment does not need to be complex or intrusive. It can provide a practical baseline that helps developers, landowners, EPC contractors, asset owners and future O&M partners understand what is appropriate, proportionate and realistic for that specific site.

Security should not be an afterthought in renewable-energy projects.
