The OR Tambo Cooperative Development Centre (ORTCDC) was founded in 2012 by a network of 1000 cooperatives from the cooperative movement of the OR Tambo District. The district’s five Local Municipalities (LM) mobilized and organized the cooperatives of each local municipality into the cooperative movement of the district. This structure championed the development of the ORTCDC in partnership with the OR Tambo District Municipality (ORTDM) regional economic development and planning unit (REDP). The ORTDM appointed the Chris Hani Cooperative Development Centre (CHCDC) to work with the Ntinga Development Agency in establishing the ORTCDC.

Research and Database consolidation were part of the core functions of their Appointment as well as the establishment of a board with an elected membership of the coop movement and independent members with qualifications that enabled them to make meaningful contributions to the development of the district’s rural economic development plans. The board members were trained, and a CEO was appointed using the HR policies of the ORT district municipality. The CHCDC then handed over the ORTCDC ceremonially in 2019. The ORTDM made a commitment based on a council resolution to provide the necessary seed funding and support of the newly founded ORTCDC in implementing its multi sectoral flagship programs as stipulated in its strategic plan.
