TREASURY BILLS VS UNIT TRUSTS: WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
If you had K5,000 today, would you invest it in Treasury Bills or a Unit Trust?
Don't answer just yet.
Let's first understand the difference.
TREASURY BILLS
When you invest in Treasury Bills, you're lending money to the Government for a short period.
Treasury Bills are available in four tenors:
• 91 days
• 182 days
• 273 days
• 364 days
The minimum investment is K1,000.
At the end of the investment period, you receive your investment back plus the return you earned.
Treasury Bills are generally considered a lower-risk investment because they are backed by the Government.
UNIT TRUSTS
A Unit Trust pools money from many investors into one fund.
A professional fund manager then invests that money in a mix of assets such as shares, Treasury Bills, Government Bonds and other investments.
Instead of choosing investments yourself, experienced professionals manage the fund on your behalf.
One of the biggest advantages of Unit Trusts is that you can start investing with as little as K200, depending on the fund.
So, what's the difference?
Treasury Bills
✅ You invest directly in a Government security.
✅ Short-term investment.
✅ Minimum investment of K1,000.
✅ Fixed investment periods of 91, 182, 273 or 364 days.
✅ Your money is generally tied up until the Treasury Bill matures.
Unit Trusts
✅ You can start with as little as K200.
✅ Your money is managed by professional fund managers.
✅ Your investment is diversified across different assets.
✅ You can generally access your money more easily by redeeming your units, subject to the fund manager's terms and processing times.
Which one should you choose?
If you have K1,000 or more and you're looking for a short-term, lower-risk investment, Treasury Bills may be a good option.
If you're just starting your investment journey, want to invest smaller amounts consistently, or value easier access to your money, a Unit Trust could be a great place to begin.
Remember, you don't have to choose one over the other.
Many investors include both in their portfolios because each serves a different purpose.
