THE BEST WAY TO DEWORM YOUR GOATS
Here’s what MOST FARMERS DON’T KNOW:
Deworming is not just about the drug, it’s about TIMING, METHOD, and DISCIPLINE.
1. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO DEWORM?
• Deworm early in the morning, ideally at 6 a.m., before your animals have eaten. The stomach should be empty for the dewormer to work effectively.
• After deworming, allow the animals to go without food for another 3 to 4 hours. This ensures the dewormer has time to act before the animals start eating again.
• You can then start giving the animals their feed by 10 a.m., which is when they would typically be let out to graze or given food.
2. SELECTIVE DEWORMING:
• Selective Deworming is key! Only deworm the animals that need it those showing signs of parasite infestation (such as weight loss, dull coat, or reduced appetite).
• Why? Over-deworming the entire herd can lead to disease resistance. Parasites can build a resistance to the drugs if you keep using the same treatment too often, making the medication less effective. Deworm only the animals that show clear signs of needing it.
3. ALTERNATE DEWORMERS:
• Alternating Dewormers: To prevent parasites from developing resistance, alternate the dewormers you use. Don’t rely on just one type of medication. Regularly switching between dewormers keeps parasites from adapting.
• Know the Parasites in Your Area: You should research the specific types of parasites prevalent in your area. For example, if liver fluke is common, make sure you use dewormers that specifically target liver fluke.
4. AFTER DEWORMING:
• After the 3-4 hour fasting period, you can start feeding the animals.
• Add palm oil or vitamin supplements to help with recovery and boost strength.
• Alternatively, adding glucose to the water can help ease the recovery process and support healing.
This simple timing and technique trick:
-Makes your dewormer 100% effective
-Prevents unnecessary losses
-Helps avoid disease resistance
-Encourages weight gain
