DIARIES OF A SMALL SCALE FARMER

EPISODE 12. 15/09/2018

CELEBRATE WITH ME

Dear Diary
This time last year my wife and I made the most scary and difficult decision of moving to the farm. This we did because we made attempts of weekend farming and it didn't work for us( this is not to mean it doesn't work.)

Dear diary, We resolved that we needed to hit the ground running, and just like a new baby who has just learnt how to walk,we where all over the show, we did this and we did that. And by so down we have and are still amassing knowledge and experience.we started this with no formal agricultural training except for the good old memories of when our parents used to make us work in their backyard gardens.

Dear diary we have cried because of farming, but we have celebrated even more because of farming, we have made losses but we have made even more gains, we have sacrificed and still have gotten rewards. Here is how our journey has been:
1. On 3rd mach 2017 we bought three chickens and started village chickens rearing, a year down the line we reached 800. This has been a success story.

2. On 3rd April 2017 we stocked our first two fish ponds with 9,000 fingerlings, on the 19th of December, all our fish was stolen, except for just a small number.(164).this broke us and we cried.

3.on 24 October 2017 we planted 2000 tomatoes, as our first attempt, 11monthes down the line we have 47,000 tomatoes in the ground at different stages, this has been the most frustrating venture but the frustration is worth it.

4. March 2018 we made an attempt @ broilers with 500 birds, this venture has been the most difficult one,but we are doing it anyway, to day we have 3000 broilers in our runs.

Dear diary its not been easy sometimes we felt like giving up, but just like a rabid dog which has no breaks and whose exhoustion recepters have been messed up, we equally have no breaks, we will work like there is no tomorrow

HAVE WE MADE IT? NO.
ARE WE MAKING PROGRESS? I THINK SO

Dear farmer, show me a business that has never recorded any setbacks,
Show me a successful person who has never failed before, do this and I'll denounce farming.
