Somewhere in the busyness of leading teams, I recently caught myself micromanaging. It wasnโ€™t intentional โ€” it was the subtle drift that happens when pressure rises and trust thins. That moment reminded me of a truth every leader must confront:

Micromanaging is about control.
Supervising is about stewardship.

Micromanaging says, โ€œI donโ€™t trust you to carry this.โ€
Supervising says, โ€œIโ€™m here to support you as you carry this.โ€

Micromanaging focuses on tasks.
Supervising focuses on people.

Micromanaging creates dependency.
Supervising builds capability.

The difference is not in how closely you watch, but why youโ€™re watching.

Leaders supervise to empower โ€” to ensure clarity, remove obstacles, and strengthen alignment. They stay close enough to guide, but far enough to let others grow.

Micromanagement, however, suffocates initiative. It replaces collaboration with compliance and turns talented people into cautious performers.

Iโ€™m learning that effective leadership requires a disciplined balance:
Be present, but not intrusive.
Be available, but not controlling.
Be invested, but not overbearing.

Supervision is leadership.
Micromanagement is fear.

And every day, we choose which one we practice.
