Today, as we commemorate World Water Day 2025, we reflect on the crucial role of water in sustaining life, driving development, and fostering peace.

This year, Zambia’s localized theme, “Water Source Protection Amidst Climate Change and Pollution,” highlights the urgent need to safeguard our water resources from increasing environmental threats. Globally, the theme “Glacier Protection” reminds us of the interconnectedness of water systems and the importance of preserving fragile ecosystems.

As the Young Water Professionals – Zambia Chapter, we are committed to empowering young professionals to drive climate-resilient water management solutions that ensure:

✅ Sustainable water source protection

✅ Pollution control and responsible water usage

✅ Climate adaptation strategies in WASH

Did you know? In Zambia, climate change has led to reduced rainfall, declining water tables, and increased pollution risks, threatening access to clean and safe water. It is up to all of us; engineers, scientists, policymakers, and communities to take action.

📢 Webinar Announcement! 📢

We’re excited to team up with the Rwanda Young Water Professional Chapter to co-host this month's webinar!

Access to WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Services is a pressing challenge in developing regions, like Sub-Saharan Africa where water resources face increasing threats due to rapid population growth, climate variability, and civil unrest. As one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change, Sub-Saharan Africa is also among the least equipped to respond to climate-related hazards, hindering progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensuring water and sanitation for all.

The youth play a critical role in driving the implementation, monitoring, and review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as holding governments accountable for their fulfilment. This webinar will therefore examine the nexus between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African youth and explore the roles of young people in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on SDG 6.

Our guest speaker, Dr. Tekalign T. Sahilu, is a Senior Expert in Water Resources and Energy sectors at The SDG Center for Africa (SDGC/A), with nearly three decades of experience in water and sanitation programs across Africa. Dr. Tekalign has held key national, regional, and international roles, including Chief Technical Advisor for Ethiopia's Water and Sanitation Programme and Regional Technical Advisor for the Water for African Cities program at UN-Habitat. He holds a BA in Economics, an MSc in Economic Development and Planning, post-graduate qualifications in project and management development, and a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). Dr. Tekalign has also published extensively on institutional systems, operational structures, and financial management in the water and sanitation sectors, including a recent contribution to the book "Safe Water and Sanitation for a Healthier World: A Global View of Progress Towards SDG 6," published by SpringerNature.
