Pause: Are you prepared to become very serious?

When I was a young entrepreneur just beginning to enjoy the first flashes of success in my business career, I befriended a very successful businessman from my
homeland. Ariston Chambati was a towering figure in his day. He was the nearest thing I ever had in those days to someone you would call a mentor today. He'd already
gained international recognition and often travelled to
international meetings, and served on several international
boards.
He would often say to me, "Master two things: your time,
and finding the right person for a job. Get those two things
right and you are on your way."
He was a "no-nonsense type" and he did not "suffer fools." If
he invited you for a meeting, no matter what time of day, he
would turn up on time and well dressed.
I will never forget how he once asked me to come see him
late one Sunday evening. Arriving at his home, I found him
dressed up and in his study. He never joked around and
expected you to get to the point quickly.
After the meeting, I asked him why he went to such great
lengths ahead of such a simple meeting, even with me. His
response was well measured and serious.
He first explained to me a very painful experience he'd gone
through on one of his business travels. Then he added:
"Young brother (he always used a term of endearment in my
mother tongue and I always addressed him by a similar
term, which means "senior brother"), you have the talent to
go very far. . ."
__"Only remember this," he said, "Don't expect others to
take you seriously when you are not prepared to take
yourself seriously. When you walk through that door, I want
you always to know that I'm a serious person."
Those words still ring in my ears over what must be two
decades now, as though that conversation took place only
yesterday.
The men and women who are going to take Africa to the next
level are those really prepared to become serious, very
serious.
End.

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers!
It's true that every person willing to be an entrepreneur or a
highly valued employee must understand the numbers side
of doing business. The bible has an entire book called
Numbers and often we see God asking the leaders to
number the Children of Levi, Israel ,Benjamin et al. In 2
Samuel 24 David was even punished of God for using
numbers to achieve a selfish end.
The greatest super power of modern Entrepreneurship is
numbers, you hear often of "Big Data" and how to analyse it
and understand it. This is because whoever can take a chunk
of the big data and work towards its monetizing will make
big money. Facebook has more than a billion people, Google
billions of search input, Apple has millions of loyal
customers. You can imagine a fancy gadget which is needed
by a few people, numbers would tell you it is not a
profitable venture. This is why as entrepreneurs we must
visualise Cost vs Benefit Analysis, it's a numbers thing which
when done wrongly can result in bankruptcy.
Train your mind to operate in the numbers arena, whenever
I'm moving around I always ask myself numbers e.g. how
many people use this road, how many cars pass by this
place, how many people visit this mall, how many people
watch football in pubs because of lacking electricity, how
many people use minibus taxis (kombi, matatu) per day or
month in such a place, how many people have medical aid,
how much of Africans have investment accounts, how many
do not have, how much time did it take me to do one thing?
When you are used to it, numbers become part of your
everyday analytical mind and this is where most businesses
& ideas are born. I've seen people excited about an idea,
then they ask me for help & first I always ask the numbers,
usually people don't have & immediately the conversation
ends with "go and number this and that through a random
check before detailed one". Usually many don't return with
feedback because numbers scare many people. I've had a
young many want to export iron ore to South Africa from
Nigeria, we looked at the numbers and immediately realised
there was no profit because he was small and there were
companies moving bigger volumes from close places like
Zambian, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, DRC.
One last secret, if ever you should meet an entrepreneur
like Dr. Strive & it's for 5 minutes in an airport lounge or
building lift you may want to do what is called "an elevator
pitch" which is a business case presented quickly to show
the profitability, have numbers ready. When you add
numbers to your proposal it's easy to get attention of
entrepreneurs. By saying "this could impact a billion people
at a cost of $1 with profit of 60c" any entrepreneur's eyes
will light up. Demonstration of numbers behind your
thinking is the principal thing. Jose Mourinho was dismissed
as Chelsea manager this week, large numbers of fans are
not happy because they loved the man, but his numbers
were not adding up and business is not run on emotions but
numbers so fans cannot understand why he was sacked,
they say he was the best, he brought many trophies before,
he said funny things but remember, "never run a business
based on feelings otherwise the numbers will punish you".

Pause: The business of sport, in numbers.
If you’re one of the highest paid football players in the world
today, you can be sure that key people in the industry spend
a lot of time looking at your “numbers,” and by this I don't
mean the number on your jersey. Modern sport at the very
top is a game of "numbers."
The top clubs employ "data" gathered on each player to
assess performance. If a player is a striker, they analyze
data from each game to assess his performance and
effectiveness. They can use it to compare him with players
from other teams and leagues. Those figures also play a
critical role when it comes to buying and selling players.
Gone are the days when players were assessed by just
watching them play. Even avid fans are increasingly debating
player performance, using such jargon as "number of
assists," "number of tackles," etc.
If you spend millions buying a player, it’s not enough simply
to see him play. They’ve developed a complex matrix to
analyze data on each player. In fact, the data I’ve mentioned
so far is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a whole "science"
involved in monitoring the performance of supreme athletes
at the top of the game, whether soccer, American football,
cricket, tennis, etc.
If you’ve spent your life following a team as a fan, it’s often
easy to forget that sport is a big business. Those "clubs" that
you like to follow, they're businesses. Just like any business
that you know, they’re selling a product or a service. Behind
the scenes are shareholders, entrepreneurs and managers
(some more important than the well-known coach). There
are business plans to be executed and profits to be pursued.
As an entrepreneur, you must always "see" the business side
of things, even if it’s your favorite sport. I can tell you the
financial numbers of some of the leading soccer clubs in
Europe. I'm so used to thinking and seeing things as an
entrepreneur that I make it a hobby to check for "numbers."
Performance is measured in numbers... As an entrepreneur,
you must always try to find ways to measure your
performance with numbers. The more you do this, the more
respected you will be. Whatever it is you are doing as an
entrepreneur, it must be measured constantly, and using
numbers.
Every type of business has its numbers. There's a way to
measure performance of every type of business utilizing
quantitative data. Do you know the numbers of your
business, or industry? Now you don’t have to invent your
own numbers, because in every type of business (just like in
sport) there are universally agreed numbers.
"How profitable is your business?" If I ask you that question,
there’s a way to answer as a man in the street or as an
"entrepreneur." Which one are you?
Your answer can lead to an investor saying, "let's sit down
and talk," or politely ending the conversation and running
away from you! There’s a way to present your answers in a
way that will have investors wanting to give you their last
penny, and another... to run far, far away from you! You owe
it to yourself to begin to know these things.
Now that this secret has been revealed to you, it’s your job
to "search out" these matters:
you’re running a trading business, what numbers should
you collect and analyze?
about mining, farming, telecoms, hairdressing,
repairing computers or driving your own taxi?
Whatever business you founded, manage or are dreaming to
create…What numbers you should be collecting and
analyzing?
We know the good players by their "numbers." As an
entrepreneur, you must respect numbers.
End.
