One of the biggest misconceptions...

about economic growth is believing that jobs are created only by large corporations...

When most people think about employment creation...

they often picture multinational companies, large factories, major investments...

or big organizations employing hundreds of people at once.

But that is only part of the story.

The reality is that some of the most significant job creation happens quietly every day through SMEs.

A small business hires one additional employee...

A growing startup brings on two more team members...

A local enterprise expands operations and recruits three new workers.

Individually, these numbers may seem small...

But when thousands of SMEs do the same thing across a country...

the impact becomes enormous.

Now imagine 10,000 SMEs each creating just two new jobs.

That is 20,000 employment opportunities.

Imagine 50,000 SMEs doing the same.

The numbers quickly become transformational...

This is why the future of employment in Zambia and Africa at large is deeply connected to the future of SMEs...

Because SMEs are not just businesses.
They are employers too!

They are training grounds for future professionals, not just sources of income for families...

And they are often the first opportunity many young people receive to enter the world of work...

Yet despite their importance...

many SMEs continue to operate under significant pressure...

Limited access to finance, restricted market opportunities, operational challenges...

And limited business support systems.

If we want to have serious conversations about reducing unemployment...

then we must also have serious conversations about strengthening SMEs first!

Because every thriving SME creates possibilities that extend far beyond the business owner.

It creates income for households, opportunities for young people..

growth for communities, and resilience for local economies...

Perhaps the question should not only be:

How many jobs are large corporations creating?

But also:

How many SMEs are we helping grow today?

Because Africa's employment future will not be built by a few large employers alone.

It will be built by millions of entrepreneurs and SMEs creating opportunities one business...

one employee, and one community at a time.
