Reuse prevents the unnecessary exploitation of our natural world. Every time we use a single-use item and put it in the garbage, we also throw away all the natural resources (trees, oil, water and energy) it took to make and get that particular product into our hands.
Among the many benefits of consuming reusable products include:
1. Prevention of the cutting down of trees, mining of metals and drilling of fossil fuels associated with single-use disposable products and packaging;
2. Stopping waste and reducing costs for businesses and local governments used to manage plastic waste;
3. Prevention of littering and saving communities money from having to clean up litter on streets and in storm drains and rivers; and
4. Protecting our oceans and helping to solve plastic pollution. Studies have shown that more than third of all plastic packaging produced winds up in the environment.
Therefore, whether they are made from fossil fuels or plants, reducing the amount of single-use products consumed through reuse has greater environmental benefits.
