4 DAYS TO GO — HAVING WATER DOES NOT MEAN YOUR ORCHARD IS BEING IRRIGATED PROPERLY

A banana orchard may have:

💧 A reliable borehole
☀️ A solar-powered pump
🛢️ A storage tank
🚿 Drip lines or other irrigation equipment

Yet some plants may still receive too much water while others receive too little.

Why?

Because water availability is not the same as irrigation efficiency.

For water to reach every plant adequately, the entire irrigation system must work together:

Water source → Pump → Storage → Pressure → Distribution → Root zone → Plant response*

A weakness at any point can affect the whole orchard.

For example:

🔹 A borehole may have sufficient water, but the pump may deliver inadequate flow.

🔹 The pump may supply the tank, but the tank may not provide sufficient operating pressure.

🔹 The mainline may carry water, but incorrect pipe sizing can create excessive pressure loss.

🔹 The drip lines may release water, but some emitters may be blocked or discharge unevenly.

🔹 Enough water may reach the field, but poor drainage can suffocate the roots.

🔹 Irrigation may be taking place regularly, but the duration may not match the crop’s actual water requirement.

The result is an orchard where some plants grow vigorously while others remain weak, stressed or unproductive.

That is why irrigation management should not be based only on asking:

“Is there water?”

We must also ask:

✅ How much water is available?
✅ How much is the pump delivering?
✅ What pressure is reaching the field?
✅ Is distribution uniform?
✅ How much water reaches each plant?
✅ Is the irrigation duration adequate?
✅ How is the root zone responding?

5 DAYS TO GO — YOUR ORCHARD MAY HAVE WATER, BUT ARE ALL THE PLANTS RECEIVING IT EQUALLY?

Many farmers judge irrigation by one simple question:

“Is there water in the orchard?”
But the more important question is:

“Is every plant receiving the right amount of water, at the right time and with acceptable uniformity?”

An orchard may have a borehole, pump, tank and irrigation pipes—and still suffer from water stress.

This can happen when:

💧 Plants near the water source receive more water than those farther away
📉 Pressure reduces along the irrigation line
🚿 Some emitters become blocked or damaged
⏱️ Irrigation is stopped before the entire root zone is adequately wetted
🌱 Water is applied too close to the pseudostem instead of covering the active root zone
🪨 Compacted soil prevents proper water infiltration
🌊 Poor drainage causes waterlogging in some parts of the orchard
📋 Irrigation is conducted without a proper schedule or monitoring system

The farmer may continue applying fertiliser, yet the plants cannot use those nutrients effectively because water distribution is poor.

WATER AVAILABILITY IS NOT THE SAME AS IRRIGATION EFFICIENCY.

Effective irrigation must consider:

Water source → Pump capacity → Storage → Pressure → Distribution → Root-zone moisture → Plant response
If one part is weak, the entire irrigation system underperforms.

That is why commercial orchard management requires more than simply opening a valve or switching on a pump.
