Startup Myth vs Fact: Zambia Edition 🇿🇲

❌ MYTH: "I’ll register my business once I start making money"

✅ FACT: You need PACRA + TPIN to open a business bank account. Most corporate clients and government tenders won’t pay into a personal account. No registration = no big money.

❌ MYTH: "Annual Returns are optional if I’m small"

✅ FACT: Miss them and PACRA charges K300 per month in penalties. After 6 months of non-compliance, they can strike your company off the register. Starting over costs more.

❌ MYTH: "I can register everything myself to save money"

✅ FACT: You can. But most founders waste 3-4 weeks on queues, rejected forms, and back-and-forth with offices. Your time building the business is worth more than K500 saved.

❌ MYTH: "I only need TPIN for ZRA, nothing else"

✅ FACT: TPIN is step 1. You also need tax clearance for contracts, import licenses, council levy, and sector permits. ZRA compliance is ongoing, not one-time.

The fix? Get it right from day one.

At EKMUS Consultancy, we help 20+ startups every month register with PACRA, ZRA, RTSA and stay compliant so they can focus on growth.

There's a statement that of common parlance "It's not what you know, it's who you know." " Your network is your net worth." Think networking is just handing out business cards and collecting LinkedIn connections? Think again. Real networking transcends through mere interactions, it's intention and Value.

What Networking ISN’T:
❌ A Numbers Game. 100+ superficial contacts who don’t know you? Useless.
❌ Begging for Favors. It’s not about asking for money or jobs outright.
❌ Just Socializing. Attending every event ≠ building a powerful network.
❌ Talking Non-Stop. Dominating the conversation makes you forgettable, not impressive.

What Networking IS:
✅ The Ripple Effect. Clearly share your value with 10 key people. They’ll amplify it to 100+ within their own circles.
✅ Building a Door-Opening System. A strong network’s value is measured by its ability to create opportunities—deals, intros, and advocates.
✅ Offering Value First. Approach every interaction asking, “How can I help?” Share insights, make connections, be a resource.
✅ Cultivating Strategic Relationships. It’s about depth, not breadth. Trust and reciprocity beat a bloated contact list any day.

The Consultant’s Network:
For consultants, networking is your lifeline. It’s how you gain insider knowledge on company culture, hiring trends, and unspoken needs. It’s not transactional—it’s about becoming a trusted, top-of-mind expert so opportunities flow to you naturally.

The integral Do’s & Don’ts:

DON’T:

Attend Every Event. Scarcity creates value. Be intentional, not everywhere.

Speak Too Much. Silence is gold. Listen more. Make your words count.

Stay too long in the Conference Room. The real magic happens in the hallways, coffee lines, and after-parties.

Ask for Pictures, "if necessary." Focus on the connection. If it’s genuine, they’ll offer to stay in touch.

DO:

Offer Value First. Be a giver, not just a taker. Build a reputation as a resource.

Go for the “Big Machines.” Don’t be intimidated by CEOs or leaders. Believe in your value, prepare, and approach them with confidence.

Dress the Part. Your appearance sets the first tone. Look sharp, groomed, and professional it shows respect and signals credibility.

The Bottom Line:
Powerful networking isn’t about collecting names. It’s about curating a circle of advocates who believe in you and your value.

Shift your mindset from “Who can help me?” to “How can I add value?” That’s when the right doors start swinging open.

💥 WHAT YOU ARE REALLY WORTH AS A BUSINESS: Smart Business Strategy. Real Growth

One of the most damaging mistakes emerging consultants make is undercharging for their expertise not because they lack skill, but because they doubt their value or don’t understand the market.

I made this mistake too, setting prices based on insecurity rather than impact. The result? Burnout, resentment, and clients who undervalued my work.

Here’s what changed everything for me 👇

🔹 1. Do Your Research

Before setting your fees, understand the market. Visit government offices, industry associations, and regulatory bodies to learn standard rates. Compare competitors with similar offerings and experience levels.

When you’re informed, you stop guessing your worth and start explaining it confidently.

🔹 2. Know Your Numbers

Pricing confidence comes from clarity — understanding your operational costs, the measurable impact of your services, and current market rates.

When I created a small “research fund” to collect accurate pricing data, I discovered that what I had been charging barely covered my costs — let alone my expertise. That insight completely reshaped how I priced my services.

💡 Lesson: Undercharging doesn’t just hurt your profit. It damages your perceived value and sets unrealistic expectations in your industry.

💰 SMART PRICING STRATEGIES FOR STARTUP CONSULTANTS

❌ Avoid hourly billing.
It creates uncertainty for both you and your clients. Especially if you're just starting up.

✅ Charge based on value and outcomes.
Clients aren’t paying for your hours — they’re paying for your experience and the results you deliver.

💬 Be intentional about consultation fees:

For casual inquiries, a modest fee filters serious clients from time-wasters.

For high-potential clients, waiving the fee can be a smart relationship investment.

Your consultation time has value — treat it as such.

🚪 LEARN TO WALK AWAY

Not every client is the right fit.
If someone constantly pushes back on your rates, that’s your cue to step away — not lower your price.

Professionals who know when to say “no” create room for better, higher-value opportunities. Your rates should grow with your reputation, not shrink under pressure.

👑 Your worth doesn’t adjust to fit someone else’s budget.

🔁 FINAL TAKEAWAY

In consultancy, your income grows in direct proportion to your confidence in your value.
Stop undercharging. Start owning your work

✅ COMPANY LTD vs BUSINESS NAME Understanding the Difference Before You Register

Before taking the step to formalize your business, it’s essential to understand the distinction between a Company Limited (Ltd) and a Business Name. This knowledge empowers you to make an informed and strategic decision about which form best suits your goals, risk appetite, and operational scale.

When registering your corporate entity, consider these three critical factors:

1️⃣ Capacity

Ask yourself how big do I intend to grow?
A Company Ltd is ideal for entities seeking expansion, investment, or formal partnerships. It’s a separate legal entity capable of owning property, entering contracts, and limiting the personal liability of its shareholders.
A Business Name, on the other hand, suits small or individual enterprises where the owner directly runs operations. It’s simpler to register but doesn’t offer liability protection.

2️⃣ Convenience

Consider the ease of management and compliance.
Registering a Business Name is quicker, cheaper, and comes with fewer regulatory requirements perfect for sole proprietors or startups testing the market.
A Company Ltd demands higher compliance standards annual returns, statutory meetings, and detailed record-keeping but in return, it offers greater credibility, especially when bidding for contracts or attracting investors.

3️⃣ Preference

your decision depends on your personal or strategic preference.
Do you value simplicity and autonomy? A Business Name might fit best.
Do you envision growth, partnerships, and long-term sustainability? Then a Company Ltd is your best bet.

📊 In Summary:

Business Name: Simple, affordable, owner-controlled — but unlimited personal liability.

Company Ltd: Structured, credible, growth-oriented — with limited liability and more formal obligations.

💡 Pro Tip:
Before registering, assess your future vision — not just your current operations. The structure you choose today will shape your business’s growth, protection, and opportunities tomorrow.
