*Causes of cannibalism*
Cannibalism is usually caused by one or more of the following reasons:

*Overcrowding*
Chickens should be provided with a space of at least four square feet per bird.

When overcrowded, chickens will begin to experience stress since they won’t be having the freedom to roam around the coop or have privacy when they want to take a nap.

*Too much light and heat*
Birds should not be exposed to light for more than sixteen hours. Constant light may be stressful for the birds. Also, when brooding, you should not use white light bulbs of more than forty watts.

Birds become extremely cannibalistic when exposed to too much heat. When brooding, try to maintain the temperature at 95 degrees centigrade. Also, reduce the brooding temperature gradually as the chicks grow. Do not heat the entire brooding system to the same temperature. Leave other places cool.

*Insufficient feed and water*
If the birds have to fight overfeed and or water, they will cause injuries to one another, and before you know it, they will be eating one another. It is therefore essential that you provide the birds with enough feed and water at all times.

Unbalanced diets
Just like the egg eating problem in poultry, cannibalism is also caused by an unbalanced diet. Birds should be fed with the right protein and other minerals depending on their age.

For example, lack of protein and nutrients such as Methionine in their feed will make them start picking feathers.

*Housing different types of birds, colors, ages, and sizes in the same coop*
Out of curiosity, the birds can start pecking. For example, if you mix non-feathered birds with the feathered ones, they may start pecking each other to find out what’s happening with other types of birds.

Also, you must not mix birds that are not of the same size. The older ones may “bully,” the younger ones. If you must combine the birds, wait until the younger ones are two thirds the size of the older birds.

_The *Black Australorp* is a fantastic roadrunner chicken breed and most of the backyard poultry keepers like to raise them._
_It is a good breed for egg production and also can be used as layers of eggs._
_It has a lasting durability of laying of about 24-30 months_
_It is the only bird in the history of chickens to have laid 364 eggs per year_
_It is a pure roadrunner breed._
_It matures at the age of 6months but when given a good feed, at the age of 5months can start laying eggs._
_It also hatches its own eggs._
_*Black Australorps* are large, heavy and very beautiful._
_They have close fitting feathers._
_They are soft feathered chicken with an upright stance._
_They have well rounded breasts and deep bodies._
_*Black Australorps* are broad across the saddles and shoulders._
_Both hens and roosters hold their compact tails high._
_Their bright red faces and black feathers with a beetle green sheen give them a striking look, which has make them different from other breeds._
_They have red colored wattles and single combs._
_Their combs have not more than seven serrations and they always keep it upright._
_The faces of *Black Australorp* chickens are totally feather free and smooth._
_Legs are black or slate-blue grey colored. Their eyes are preferably black, beaks are dark._
_The underside of the feet of *Black Australorp* chickens are white._
_A large sized *Black Australorp* rooster weights about 4kgs to 4.7kgs and a large sized hen weights about 3kgs to 3.7kgs._
_Their meat is tender and very delicious.They are also an ideal breed for the novice domestic keepers._
_Generally *Black Australorps* are good looking, hardy, easygoing and highly prolific layers._
_Right now it is one of the best prolific layer breeds with the hens laying brown medium sized eggs that are larger than other road runners._
_The Black Australorp hen can lay 300 to 330 per year.
