DRUGS or ANTIBIOTICS

Short Act Drugs
Short-acting antibiotics act quickly within the pigs body and have a shorter duration of effectiveness within the body. This explains why short act antibiotics are used to address diseases that require immediate intervention otherwise an outbreak looms so fast. They typically require more frequent administration, coming in 3-5 days courses.

Sometimes short act drugs are administered multiple times per day in a bid to maintain therapeutic levels of the antibiotic in the bloodstream. What makes short act antibiotics desirable is that the stockman is at liberty to adjust the dosage based on the pig’s response to treatment.

Long-Acting Antibiotics
Long-acting antibiotics are formulated to have a prolonged duration of action, meaning they can maintain effective levels of the antibiotic in the body over an extended period. However, it must be clearly emphasized that long act antibiotics also take time to kick in into the pig’s system, that is why a stockman cannot rely on long act drugs in treating outbreaks.

Long Act antibiotics are all drugs that are 20% or more on their packaging. 20% is common with Amoxilin and Penicilin group of drugs like Limoxin, Alamycing and Teramicing drugs. They often require fewer administrations, typically given as a single injection, sometimes once or twice a day and provide sustained antibacterial activity over several days or weeks
