How to keep your home safe from burglars

Some simple measures to help stop being burgled from consumer expert Jessica Gorst-Williams.

Start with the front door
'If you are moving to a new home, either rented or bought, have the keys changed.'

• Don’t let people into the house who appear out of the blue for unauthorised and unexpected reasons.
• Don’t keep valuables in places that are likely to be predictable to burglars such as under the bed. Don’t keep any valuation documentation with the valuables. Consider a built-in safe.
• Don’t have your car or house keys near the door or accessible to a would- be intruder in any other way. An accomplished thief may be able to hook them out through the letterbox. The same principle applies to open windows or leaving keys in the garden such as under a flowerpot particularly if you can be observed by passing traffic.
• Don’t tell local tradesmen and shopkeepers your holiday plans.
• Have arrangements made for say a neighbour to take in anything that might be left tellingly outside the door while you are away.
• Conspicuously ask your neighbour to note down number plates of suspicious vehicles parked and seemingly observing comings and goings.
• Don’t have clearly valuable items visible from outside.
• Secure garden ornaments so they are difficult to shift and lock greenhouse doors and take out the keys.
• Older people tend sometimes to display wodges of pension money notes in the street. Real poverty and drug abuse may shatter any scruples of someone who is desperate and who then could follow particularly vulnerable people home to steal from them.
• If you are moving to a new home, either rented or bought, have the keys changed.
• Make accessibility daunting with bright trigger lights and possibly thorny bushes near windows that might be climbed in through.
• If going on holiday do not show your home address on your luggage label.

Secure Your Home with 10-point Checklist

Everybody loves to go on holiday, but none of us want to arrive home to find we have been burgled. In the rush to get away, it ́s easy to forget the simple steps that can help keep your home safe and secure beyond just locking the door. Statistics show that homes left unoccupied are more likely to be broken into and those that are empty for more than a month each year are 43% more likely to suffer a burglary. To help save time and remind people of what they can do, I believe the following 10 point check list might help.
Burglars target homes that look empty, so make your home appear busy and lived in. It is a good idea to get help from neighbours or family, let them know your holiday plans and when you expect to return. You could also ask them to collect post, open and close curtains and put your rubbish bin out on your driveway to give your home that “lived in” feel.
Our “Home Secure” checklist:
• Ensure that all windows are fitted with locks and or magnetic contacts, and make certain doors have dead bolt locks.
• Secure sliding glass doors with a metal bar or wooden dowel placed in the door track.
• Leave curtains slightly parted so your house doesn't have an empty look, but don't leave valuables or electronic equipment where burglars can see them through windows.• Never leave an answering machine message indicating you're not home.
Simply say that you cannot take the call at that moment.
• Never leave door keys under a doormat or plant pot outside.
• If you have a monitored home security system, make sure it is working properly and has been properly tested at least 4 weeks before you go away. If you do not have a monitored alarm, consider having one installed because they are an effective deterrent. MULTI-LINK currently have a promotional offer on this.
• Use timer switches to turn lights on and off, giving your home the impression it is occupied. They are inexpensive, easy to operate and can be obtained from good DIY stores.
• Avoid discussing holiday plans with strangers, you never know who they might pass the information on to.
• Secure important documents and valuable items in a safe place within your
home or deposit them in a bank.
May I take this opportunity to wish you all a safe, secure and joyous holiday.
