The 10 fastest-growing drinks brands on Instagram

It may not be easy to stand out in a crowded field, but the 10 fastest-growing drinks brands on social media have encountered a winning formula when it comes to engaging their followers and keeping them coming back for more.

Whatever your personal opinion on the value of a large social media following for drinks brands, there’s no getting away from the fact that it has become an increasingly key metric in recent times.

French spirits exports rise by 11.6%

Exports of French spirits grew by double digits to €5.5 billion (US$5.9bn) last year, despite a volume decline for Cognac.

According to trade body the Fédération des Exportateurs de Vins & Spiritueux de France (Fevs), French spirits exports increased by 11.6% in 2022, with volumes up by 2.2% to 55.7 million cases.

In 2021, French spirits exports rose by 30.1% in value and increased 12.4% in volume.

Cognac recorded a 3.7% drop in volume last year and a 9.3% increase in value.

Armagnac also recorded a decline in volume, down by 4.8%, but value rose by 7%. Other wine-based spirits saw an 8.4% volume decline.

However, liqueurs performed strongly, rising by 14.1% in volume and 12.8% in value.

Vodka experienced a 7.6% volume increase and soared by 28.7% in value.

Calvados was up by 6.1% in volume and 9.8% in value.

Combined French wine and spirits exports reached a record high of €17.2bn (US$18.4bn) in 2022, up by 10.8% on the previous year, however Fevs said this must be adjusted for inflation. Wine reached €11.6bn (US$12.4bn) in 2022, up by 10.2%.

“This positive result in 2022 marks the resilience of the industry in a particularly complex environment,” said César Giron, chairman of Fevs.

The value of French wine and spirits exports rose 11% in 2022, a rise largely informed by rising prices, Reuters reports.

The wine and spirits sector is France’s second-largest export after aerospace, and accounted for some 17.2 billion euros in value in 2022 – a rise of 10.8% on the previous year according to the Federation of French Wine and Spirits Exporters (FEVS).

FEVS anticipates that export value could continue to rise this year as China’s economy opens up post-Covid.

The rise in export values was ably abetted by a 14% jump in exports to the United States to total 4.7 billion euros.

“The United States confirmed its role as the driving force behind French wine and spirits exports,” FEVS chairman Cesar Giron told Reuters.

China’s Covid restrictions impacted exports to the country in 2022, though as the economy continues to open up this year, Giron is hopeful of a resurgent market in 202. “Restaurants and hotels are full, people want to see each other so I expect a rebound in the coming months in terms of wine and spirits in China,” he said.

Britain, France’s second-largest export market, rose 7% in value in 2022 to total 1.7 billion euros.

Champagne exports were a particularly high point in 2022, the 326 million bottles shipped marking the highest annual figure in 15 years.

There's a quiet revolution going on in Spain's most famous wine region.

In this troubled age, it is rare to find a development which everyone can applaud, unequivocally, but there might just be one in Spain – the rising ascendancy of Rioja Blanco.

Twenty years ago, you'd have to question the wisdom of any winemaker who decided to invest time and resources into a moribund category, largely confined (with the exception of Viña Tondonia) to the domestic market.

in 2023, it wouldn't be considered lunacy to incinerate a whole load of underperforming red vineyards in Rioja, and replace them en mass with Viura.
How did this happen? It's all the fault of consumers, who continue to gravitate towards white, rosé, and sparkling wines at the expense of red. According to Rioja's Consejo Regulador production of white Rioja accounted for 9.72 percent of the total volume in 2021, compared to just 5 percent in 2012. Meanwhile, the acreage planted to white varieties has increased by almost 50 percent since 2015

Jay-Z and Bacardi have finally resolved their dispute over a joint venture named D’ussé. The lawsuit was filed back in October 2018, with Jay-Z claiming that Bacardi backed out of the deal without notifying him.

The singer and Bacardi have reached an agreement regarding the ‘mismanagement’ and worth of their joint Cognac brand D’ussé. Recording artist Jay-Z has agreed to pay more than $6 million in damages for allegedly unjustly taking advantage of his controlling share in the spirits company.
The settlement, reached on Friday 3 February 2023, states that Empire Investments must buy out Jay-Z’s stake in the Cognac company, leaving Bacardi owning at least 75.1% of the business. At the time of writing, no sum had been disclosed to the public.

Jay-Z, through SCLiquor, will retain a “significant ownership stake” and said in a statement that he is “excited to renew this partnership with Bacardi.”

As searches soar, whiskey continues to seduce the world, finding fans in the unlikeliest of places.

The popularity of whiskey has never been greater. A look at data from Wine-Searcher.com reveals that the number of whiskey offers listed on the site increased by 14.2 percent over last year, as stores profited from an increase in consumer interest in whiskey. The total number of whiskey offers now tops 1 million globally.

The number of retailers listing whiskey on Wine-Searcher rose by 22.3 percent in the past year, but searches for whiskey on our site grew even faster: they increased by 26.6 percent to pass 28 million, meaning demand for whiskey is currently outpacing supply.

The growth in searches for wine and spirits is even more significant when measured against the category of all alcoholic beverages. According to the search data from The Spirits Business, offers of wine grew by 5.4 percent, while merchant numbers were up 13.2 percent. Searches for wine were up only 4 percent against 2021. In contrast, spirits fared better: offers were up by 15 percent and merchant listings grew by 24 percent..
