‘More than a decade ago, when I first went to photograph the women cricketers in a rather run down practice facility in Karachi Pakistan, the entire setting spoke to me in metaphors - the boundary line representing the restrictions imposed on women by our society to operate within, high above the ground the birds representing freedom, and on ground the fierce women in green wearing soft bangles playing with the hard ball trying to prove a point, in a sport otherwise known as, a gentleman's game.’

New Year started right!

I am still trying to hold on to the sweetness of my meeting with Dr. Azra Raza (Azra Apa, as I now have the privilege of calling her) for as long as I can. The depth of her knowledge, and the beauty with which she explains her perspective is truly astounding.

It was a privilege to experience her inspiring aura and that of her space - a space that as Ghalib puts it is as nostalgic about the past as it is about the future.

Being a scientist, the nature of her work demands exploring about the possibilities in the future, yet she refuses to let go of the past, the dimension deep-rooted in her DNA by her incredible immigrant parents, and so she finds this unique intelligent way of juxtaposing the past and the present, almost merging the two: Classic with Modern, East with West, Sufism with Atheism, Science with Poetry. And that is exactly what I witnessed in her private space.

Wonder. Curiosity. Vulnerability

These were some of the key take aways for me from our meeting.

I am still processing what I experienced.

Couple of hours went by in a blink, and I could spend countless more listening to and learning from her in her beautiful space.

Azra Apa gifted me her first book that she wrote, ‘A Tribute to Ghalib’ previously published as ‘Ghalib: Epistemologies of Elegance’, and signed a copy of her book that I had read and took with me.

I also presented my book, and later she sent a beautiful review that you can head over to my stories / highlights to see.

My New Year Resolution is to acknowledge how much more there is to learn. Also to be eternally grateful to Allah for the learning opportunities with some of the wisest, most beautiful souls. Alhamdulillah 🙏🏽

Here’s to starting 2023 with the desire to continue to learn and grow.

Contrary to my perception of him being witty, open, and talkative, Anwar Sahib was unusually quite when I met him in real life. Maybe my expectation of him was based on how I perceived him on television - how we sometimes conveniently assume that we know a person based on what they choose to reveal to us.

I had made a special trip from Abu Dhabi to Karachi out of pocket, just to meet him and take his portrait. I told him the same, but I am not sure how much of it he believed, as he did not say anything but acknowledged with a silent nod.

More than meeting him, I wanted to learn something, anything, that I could get hold on to, by just being in his company.

We started off by taking his portrait in the beautifully nurtured green garden of his lovely home, and he did whatever I requested him for the shots, remaining silent. Later, I presented him with my book which he accepted graciously; I talked about my podcast and how passionate I was about reviving the art and medium of Urdu story narration for children, he remained a keen listener; I recited my poetry, thinking deeply he made a few suggestions.

He was a man of few words but those few words had a lot of weight and carried 80+ years of wisdom in them.

That day, I learnt a lot.

I learnt through his silent demeanor, and beautiful manners.

That day I also learnt that a thin layer of TV glass screen between the artists and yourself, does not give way to their souls, and for that you have to cover the physical distance, and once you do that, you can touch their soul, even if mostly in silence.

It was such a pleasure to meet Dr. Umar Saif, a Pakistani academic, scientist, and innovator. Among the many accolades he received, the most notable ones are Sitara-e-Imtiaz (the third highest civilian award) for his service toward public and education sector in Pakistan 🇵🇰

He was the first Pakistani to be named as one of the top 35 young innovators in the world by the MIT Technology Review, and the first Pakistani to receive the Google faculty research award. He was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, and was also named among the 500 most influential Muslims in the world!

More of his work can be seen at: https://www.umarsaif.org/

I presented my book Women in Green and Beyond to Dr. Saif, and took his portrait for my upcoming project.

We share the same alma mater (LUMS)

Had the privilege of meeting the quintessential creative Sarmad Khoosat.

Had a great chat with him, presented him my book and took his portrait for my upcoming project. I was truly impressed by his humility and gentle demeanor.

Also, we recently watched his masterpiece ‘Kamli’ and was totally blown away by his sensibility and intelligent ex*****on of the film.

Thank you for being so brave and for making beautiful, thought provoking films 🎥
