Start Business Services We help UK, Irish and Australian owners set up and run a real business in the UAE — company formation, banking, visas, and the accounting behind it.

Not every business should move to the UAE, and we'll say so. If the only reason is to cut a tax bill, it usually doesn't fit — and it tends to end badly.

The businesses it works for have a real reason: new markets, a genuine base between regions, room to grow. If that's you, it can pay for itself. If it isn't, better to hear that now than after you've moved. We'd rather tell you straight.

UAE corporate tax is no longer theory — returns are being prepared and filed across the market now. For most owner-managed businesses it's a straightforward 9% on profit above AED 375,000, with simplified paths for smaller companies.

The work is in getting the records and the timing right, not in the rate. If you have a December year-end, your return is due by 30 September — better early than meeting the deadline in a scramble.

One reason owners underrate the UAE: it's an unusually easy place to build a team. From here you can hire from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and the visa route to employ people is well worn.

For an owner who's struggled to fill roles at home, that reach often matters more than any tax line. A business is only as good as its people — and the UAE makes that part simpler than most expect.

The UAE has quietly raised the bar, and for the right owner that's good news. It now expects real substance — genuine activity, proper accounts, people and premises that match what the company claims to do.

That's harder for a brass-plate setup and easier for a real, growing business. If you've actually built something, a credible UAE base makes you look more serious to banks and partners, not less. The bar is the point.

A heads-up rather than an alarm: the UAE is bringing in mandatory e-invoicing. Large businesses come first from 2027, with smaller ones phased in after — most owner-managed companies aren't in the first wave.

There's nothing to panic about, but it's worth knowing it's coming so your systems and bookkeeping are ready in good time rather than in a rush. We keep an eye on the timeline so clients aren't caught out.

The order matters more than people expect. A lot of UAE banking pain comes from filing the company first and thinking about the account afterwards — then discovering the activity or structure doesn't suit the bank.

We do it the other way round: look at what the business does and who owns it, line up the bank on that basis, then set up the company to match. Slower to decide, far smoother to open.

When a UAE business account stalls, it's rarely random. It's usually one of three things: an ownership chain the bank can't follow, an activity on the licence that doesn't match what the money actually does, or a source-of-funds story that isn't documented.

Sort those before you apply and it tends to move quickly. Leave them to the bank to unpick and it drags. The account is where good preparation pays off.

Two things people repeat about UAE banking that aren't quite true.

One: that the central bank requires every business to hold a separate account. It doesn't — though keeping business and personal money apart is still sensible.

Two: that the UAE is on an international "grey list". It was, and it came off in early 2024. The reputation lag is real, but the facts have moved on.

Good decisions come from the current rules, not the old headlines.

A common misread: set up in a free zone and you can sell freely across the UAE. Not by default. A free-zone company trades within its zone and internationally, but to sell into the mainland it usually needs a mainland distributor or the right permit.

There's a newer route in Dubai — a 2025 resolution lets Dubai free-zone companies operate onshore through a branch or a short-term permit. Useful, but it has conditions. Worth getting the structure right for where you'll actually sell, before you file.

In a UAE free zone, the tax treatment isn't a badge you get once and forget. To keep it, a company has to show real substance, keep audited accounts, meet transfer-pricing rules and stay inside the qualifying-income limits — checked every year.

That's not a reason to avoid a free zone. It's a reason to build one that stands up to the test, rather than one that only looks right on day one. Done properly, it's stable. Done cheaply, it unravels at the first review.
