Take a guess, what’s the biggest challenge with establishing a successful consulting practice in Dubai?

Not being established in Dubai, it would seem!

Okay, I’m mostly established - my company is there, I have a bank account there, but... I’m not there! And in a culture that thrives on relationship building, I really need to be there more often than twice a year. So I’m selling up and heading there just as soon as possible.

Sure, the recent troubles reduced the pull factor a little.
But the push factor is only getting stronger.

Update: it’s my last full day in Dubai and I’m heading to Business Bay to collect my Emirate ID.

I’m travelling on the wonderfully clean and efficient Metro, on the Red Line.

I glance up and see I’m passing the Microsoft, Oracle, IBM and Canon offices near Dubai Internet City.

A few minutes later I’m seeing a street with supercar showrooms.

Nearly everywhere im seeing new high rise buildings being constructed.

The city’s 2040 plan is to improve connectivity, reduce traffic and pollution, create 20 minute towns, and improve quality of life here. Its a transformation beyond the wildest dreams of most cities, but here it’s a reality.

Its an incredibly ambitious city that attracts highly driven people. Maybe it could be your home too?

I think that if the best project managers in the world had their technical project management skills erased from their memories, and were dropped into random projects, within a few weeks they’d be thriving.

They share an innate drive to get things done, to work well with others, to consider different perspectives, to communicate effectively and to see the big picture.

The processes, techniques and controls will improve the odds of success for sure; but they’re easily learnable. Just watch my channel or read a text book.

The greatest asset a top project manager has is their desire to get things done, and whilst I know we can explain that, and we can create conditions that drive that behaviour, I’m not sure it can ever be taught. In every profession, some people are just naturals.
