Margazhi is a sacred month of music, devotion, and shared cultural expression. Rooted in tradition, it brings together voices, stories, and art across generations and geographies.
Meet the Singers :
Minu Pasupathi
Mrs. Minu Pasupathi started her initial classical music training from Smt. Leelavathi Venkatachar and continued her advanced training from Smt. Vijaya Nagarajan and Chitraveena Sri. Ganesh Sudarshan.
Minu has her master’s degree in Indian Karnatik Classical Music from the University of Madras, India. Since 2011, Minu has been the Director of South Asian Music Ensemble (SAME) at the University of Chicago, Hyde Park, IL.
Minu is the Founder Director of Akshaya Music Academy in Rolling Meadows, IL. She has been teaching vocal music to aspiring students of all ages since 1990 in person & online. Her unique & creative style of teaching has made her the most popular teacher in the area.
With a wonderful versatile voice, Minu has performed concerts in various South Indian genres namely Carnatic Classical, Folklore, Devotional songs, Film music, etc.
She is also the most sought-after vocalist for various Dance recitals such as Bharathanatyam, Kuchupudi, Kathak & Bollywood.
Minu has given several Lecture Demonstrations, Voice culture workshops & has also judged music competitions in prestigious organizations in various states of USA, India & Singapore.
Minu is the TITLE WINNER of Bajaj-Colgate SAPTASWARANGAL, a music reality show in SUN TV, Chennai for the year 1997. She is also the proud recipient of MISS VOICE AWARD from BHAARAT SANGEET UTSAV, Michigan for the year 2012.
Minu was interviewed by Smt. Raji Ramachandran of “Vallinach Chiiragugall” magazine of Atlanta after being chosen as one of the 15 North America’s most talented Tamil women, was honored with the “Thamizhanban 80” award at FeTna World Tamil Conference event held at New York on July 2, 2022.
Born in Madurai & brought up in Chennai, she is a gifted artist who sings / mimics in multiple voices – male, female, baby & Nadaswaram. She is said to have inherited the versatile voice from her Grandfather Vikatam Sri. Ramasami Iyer. Sri. Ramasami Iyer was able to mimic various sounds of musical instruments, & birds with his voice. He was a great Konakol and mimicry artist. He was entitled as “VIKATAKAVI” by the Tanjore Maharaja.
Minu, an RJ, conceptualized and hosted Isai Vannangall (Colors of Music) for Inayavaani Internet Radio (2016–2017) and later presented Aananda Ragam, a 10-week raga-based Tamil film music series, for UK Tamil Radio (2022). Her interests include music composition, mimicry, crafts, reading, and writing. She is married to Karthikeyan Krishnan and is a proud mother to Akshaya.
Akshaya Kannan
Akshaya Kannan has been introduced to Carnatic Classical Vocal music at a very young age, by her mother Smt. Minu Pasupathi.
Akshaya has formal training in Western Keyboard from Mr. Andy Marsala (Chicago) and Carnatic keyboard from Sri. N Muralikrishnan (California).
She has also learned to play western violin at her school orchestra and got formally trained in playing Carnatic violin initially from Sri. Jaishankar Balan (Michigan) and Sri. Venkatesh Padmanabhan (Chicago).
She has completed her SALANGAI POOJA in Indian Classical Dance - Bharatanatyam under the exemplary training of Guru Smt Vidya Babu (Vazhuvoor Sri Kunjidapadham Pillai style).
Akshaya has given several performances in Vocal, Violin, keyboard, and dance for various organizations in and around Chicago.
She is one of the core team members of an Indian Music Band called AIME. This Music Band consists of all youth artists, who perform for organizations to help raise funds for the less fortunate.
She is also the founder Director of SOLACE CHICAGO, through which she performs for charitable organizations.
Akshaya graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in December 2020 with a double major in Chemistry and Spanish and a Linguistics minor. She recently graduated from MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston (a Harvard affiliated school) with a master’s in Speech-Language Pathology.
Her hobbies include writing poetry and learning various languages.

Dr. Shambavi Rajagopal is the curator and host of Margazhi Mozhi, a space for thoughtful conversations that blend music, belief, and lived experience. Through this series, she brings together diverse voices to celebrate Margazhi beyond boundaries.
