We have been through a step-by-step approach trying to dismantle the wires of negativity with the intention to have a better and happier life when we chase our dreams, realize our potential and unfold the opportunities ahead of us. We passed through 5 stations of Negativity Checks: identifier - criticizer - braker - pauser - visualizer. The technique you are about to learn today is the most difficult. Most people stop at step 5 (visualizer) for a while because the journey is tiring and requires stamina and endurance. But I believe in you, and I know you can do it. But will you?

6. Flip 180
Flip 180 is a technique that needs continuous practice. I want you to be stubborn and tenacious facing your negative thoughts. If your negative attitude pushes you to do some negative action, do the opposite instead, then do this opposite over and again. And keep trying until you replace the negative action with a positive habit.

Practical Flipping:
I used this technique helping one of my clients who used to make nasty remarks about her neighbors and coworkers. She was made aware about this terrible habit, and we agreed to use and keep using the Flip 180 methodology.

Each time she starts badmouthing others, I stop her to do the opposite action and say positive comments about them.
Her comment “She doesn’t know how to dress, her color selections are horrible” changed to “She has so much courage selecting these vivid colors, it reflects her outgoing style, she just being herself”. In few weeks the changes were so much noticeable.

Great business leaders of today used this technique in the past. Celebrities who suffered digging their way to the top used the power of positive visualization. Read the biography of the famous actor Jim Carrey or watch his interview with Oprah speaking about his daily visualization. When he had nothing, he wrote himself a check @ 10 million Dollars to be paid in 5 years for his acting services. He conditioned his brain to believe this will happen. And he received $ 7 million for his movie “Dumb and Dumber” that was filmed in Colorado and released December 16, 1994.

5. Visualize the positive
This article will not tell you how to do the visualization technique (also called Positive Imagery). It aims at reminding you to try replacing a negative thought once hits your mind with a positive picture.
Let us suppose you are finding yourself thinking about a possible upcoming failure, change the picture immediately and imagine your success in that same situation, then hold tightly to that picture in your mind until your thoughts change into the positive.
The technique worked for many world-class stars, athletes, entrepreneurs and businesspeople. Few names to mention: Will Smith, Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tiger Woods.

Have you ever thought to record all what you say, every conversation you run, all your phone calls for just one day and listen to yourself? Well, I bet that the chances are, unless you are a motivational speaker, 50% of your talks are negative. You are either complaining about something, or blaming someone, or just being grumpy because something did not go as you desire. I want you to pause and stop talking!

4. Avoid speaking the negative
Let me show you the vicious circle of negative attitude.
Think Negative leads to Feel Negative Leads to Speak Negative Ends with Behave Negative Breeds Think Negative Again.

• Talks foster actions
Whether you are a tennis player like me or a football fan or you are following other sports, you have noticed players jump and shout “yes” after they score. Verbalizing this “Yes” and speaking it up elevates their spirit and boost their energy positively. They immediately play better and faster; their stamina and endurance elevate on the spot. Well, it goes in the reverse direction too.
When you speak the negative and express your bad thoughts verbally, you empower them and the words you use start to weave together to shape your behavior and actions.

• Verbalize the positive
Instead of voicing negative words, why not try to verbalize more of the positives. You might think it is difficult! Not after I show you how to do it.

First be reminded that so far you did 3 great steps, and you took enough time to master them and be in control. If you well completed the identifier, criticizer and braker, then the pauser will not be that challenging.
1. Identifier: Identify your recurrent negative thoughts
2. Criticizer: Criticize your recurrent negative thoughts
3. Braker: How to stop negative thoughts

Action 3A. Block the negative influence in your life.
Action 3B. Stop the negative thoughts when the visit your mind.

Let’s try step 4 (Pauser) together.
Once the negative thought that occupied you mind wants to be verbalized into bad and terrible sound waves, pause. You are in control. Then process it quickly through your criticized filter pick the disadvantages of the thought that will hold you in place and turn them into positive words. Actions will follow at a later stage.

Example (1):
“I will look so silly in this meeting; all others are seniors to me”:
Will be “It is a chance to be with this group of experts. What a great learning opportunity”.

Example (2):
“I will not be in shape anyways, there is no point in this diet system":
Will be “I have an opportunity to test my strong will and fight my eating desires”.

Example (3):
“It is going to be a bad day:
Will be “I have blessed with a new day; how will I make it a good one?”

Negativity Review 3 - Braker

In many instances, negative thoughts are produced by old seeds implemented in our minds many years ago. May be in our childhood, then over the years they grew into big trees.
Did your schoolteacher told you in the elementary school that you are not fit to join your school football team and since then you think you are incapable of doing any sport activities. Well, you are not alone. Even Einstein was marked stupid by many students in the elementary school.
Bumps of negative thoughts always raise in our brains. I want to help you smooth them and turn them into small pebbles that you can handle. I want you to have a brake system to stop them before you crash.

3. How to stop negative thoughts
Action A. Block the negative influence in your life.
Of course, you know the sources of negative influences in your personal and work life. No need for me to state examples, but I pray for you it is not your boss or your spouse since those two are hard to eliminate and need different tactics. In case the source of negativity can’t be eliminated (you know who I mean). At least reduce or minimize the exposure.
This also apply to places where you usually meet complainers, those who see the problem in every situation and others who have dark view of life.
Another tip, reduce the time follow the news. They just bring you the doom and gloom. Not because that what is happening, but because that what sells.
You task is to write your list of both negative people and dark places and segment them into 3 categories: Avoid, Minimize, Eliminate.
Action B. Stop the negative thoughts when the visit your mind.
There are three levels for this action depending on your practice, mental power, stamina and belief in the effect of this action.
Level 1: Think stop
Level 2: 1 + Say stop
Level 3: 1 + 2 + Act stop
In level 2you shout at yourself with high voice forcing your brain to not open the door for the negative idea. In level 3 you face the mirror look at yourself directly in the eye and raise your hand with the stop gesture. Believe it or not after repetition and practice your mind will obey.

What do you do when the negative thoughts pass into your mind without knocking the door?
Most probably you listen to them, and that is OK; we all do. My question “Do you believe them, ignore them or just let them go?” You might challenge me back and say “Well, what if they are true and legitimate? What if they have good reasons and logical background?” Then my best suggestion is to debate with your negative thoughts and criticize them. Let me show you how to do it.

2. Criticize your recurrent negative thoughts
• Prison your most recurrent negative thoughts by writing them down. You might refer to the list of negative thoughts in my previous article. If you have many thoughts don’t put them together. Prison them individually in separate cells. One thought per paper.

• Look carefully and think deeply about each one. What are the advantage and the disadvantage of each? You might be surprised reading “Advantage of Negative Thoughts!”. Yes, you read it correct eventually negative thoughts are trying to keep you in your Safe Shell that others call Comfort Zone. Let me state an example: if you think you are poor in presenting before audience and you’ll be terrible in public speaking, then this negative thought is trying to keep you safe and protect you from public embarrassment. Looks like a noble purpose.
• Compare the lists, the good and bad of each negative thought. Be honest and realistic. In most cases the good list will be much shorter compared to the long bad list of disadvantages. Your good list even might be Zero.

• Now here is the challenging part: The list of disadvantages is what you are missing because of this negative idea. In the previous example it can be ‘Presenting in important events, getting to be known and expand my network, giving significant talks that make a difference or moving high up in my career”. The list of bad will push you to discard the negative thought. On the other hand, the list of advantages is what cements you to this negative idea. It is your time to start some actions to oppose those apparently looking good and counterattack them.

You can’t prevent all negative thoughts from coming into your mind, but you can keep yourself from hanging on to them. There are some tactics that help you get rid of any negative attitudes you might have. They are simple in concept, hard to do, and they work.
1. Identify your recurrent negative thoughts
Negative attitudes are negative thoughts coming over and over. Your first tactic is to listen to yourself for one week and observe all the negative thoughts that come to your mind. Then write them down.
The list can be long; don’t feel intimidated or overwhelmed. Here is my pick for you:
• “I will never make it up in my career to be a general manager of my company’
• “Others are smarter than me”
• “I will not be able to cope with this digital era we are living in”
• “I am too old to do this anymore”
• “I am too old to start this business”
• “It is too late to shift career”
• “It is too early for me to have my own business”
• “I’ll never be able to get ahead”
• “I can’t complete this project”
• “I can’t start this project”
• “I am not pretty”
• “My attire is awful; I will never learn how to dress”
• “I will not be able to lose weight”
• “Learning this is like rocket science for me”
• “I am not a good sales person and can’t close deals”
• “I have no experience to give this talk”
• “Better not to join this group; they are all better than me”
• “I will never be able to buy this … “
• “I will never be able to impress her”
• “I will never be able to impress him”
• “I will never be able to attract her/him”
• “I’d better stick to what I know and stay in the same place”
