Greece and Portugal dominate the EU Golden Visa conversation, but neither offers what Hungary does.

Hungary's Guest Investor Visa is the only residency program in Europe granting a 10 year renewable residency from the outset. For an investment of €250,000 in investment certificates issued by a real estate fund registered with the National Bank, you gain the right to reside, work, and study in Hungary, plus visa-free access across the Schengen Area, with your spouse, children, and parents included in the same application.

The pathway extends further. Live in Hungary for three continuous years and you can obtain permanent residency. Stay an additional eight years after that, and citizenship, full EU citizenship, becomes available.

Every second passport gets sold on one number: how many countries you can visit visa-free. Higher always looks better.

But 147 visa-free countries isn't automatically more useful to you than 93, or 70. What matters is whether the specific countries on that list are the ones you actually need.

An investor expanding into the US cares about a different set of countries than one building access across Europe. Someone doing business in Asia needs China, Singapore, and Hong Kong on that list. Someone focused on emerging markets needs a completely different mix.

St. Kitts and Nevis: 147 countries visa-free. Grenada: 139. Türkiye: 121. Vanuatu: 93. São Tomé: 70. Each number tells you almost nothing on its own. The right passport is the one whose list overlaps with where your life and business actually take you.

Here's the truth: price shouldn't be the only variable you evaluate a program on. But if budget is a real constraint, several strong pathways exist under $100,000, and none of them ask you to compromise on what matters.

France's Passive Income Visa requires zero investment. Just proof you can support yourself. You get renewable residency, Schengen-wide access, and family inclusion, without relocating to renew your permit.

São Tomé and Príncipe offers full citizenship from $90,000, with visa-free access to over 70 destinations including South Africa, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Parents and grandparents over 55 qualify too.

Latvia gives non-EU investors an EU foothold from €50,000, with a route to citizenship after ten years and no minimum stay requirement.

France's Passeport Talent Visa, from €35,000, is built for founders and entrepreneurs ready to build something in France, with a path to permanent residency after five years.

There's no single right answer here. The right program is the one that matches what you're actually trying to build, at a price that makes sense for where you are now.
