Common mistakes when choosing residency or a second citizenship

1️⃣ choosing a country based on pretty pictures and “passport in 3 months” promises, without understanding the requirements, tax rules and real limitations.

2️⃣ looking only at the entry cost. Cheaper does not mean better: what matters is which rights you actually get, how long they last, and what really changes for your family.

3️⃣ ignoring tax consequences. You can obtain residency or citizenship and only then discover higher tax pressure, new reporting duties and obligations nobody warned you about.

4️⃣ copy‑pasting someone else’s strategy. What worked for a friend or a blogger can be completely irrational for your business model, profession or family situation.

5️⃣ going straight for a passport when, based on your goals, a residency would be enough — or, on the contrary, settling for residency where you objectively need a second citizenship.

If you don’t want to test these mistakes with your own money and time, reach out to us at .plains.eng — we’ll map out your goals and suggest solutions tailored to your specific situation.

Residency vs Second Passport: What’s the Real Difference for You and Your Family?

Many people confuse these two concepts, but in practice they work completely differently.

Residency is the right to live in a country as long as you meet certain conditions: prove your income, comply with physical presence requirements, and renew your documents on time. It’s the status of a foreigner with the right to reside.

A second passport is full citizenship. You become a citizen of that country with no time limits or need for additional permissions.

With residency, you can live, study, in some cases work and do business, open bank accounts and buy property — but legally you remain a foreigner.

With a second passport, you get full citizen status: a different level of travel freedom, access to additional jurisdictions for your capital, and a layer of protection that cannot simply be «not renewed» by someone’s decision.

In practice, the strongest solution is the combination: residency as a fast, working tool — and a second passport as a long-term safety and mobility asset for your family.

🇦🇪 The UAE has introduced a new tool for landlords — Tenant Screening.

Landlords can now run a credit check on prospective tenants through UAE PASS before signing a contract, as long as the tenant approves the request in the app.

For owners, this is a new way to manage risk before entering into a tenancy agreement. For the wider market, it’s a move towards greater transparency and a more structured approach to tenant selection.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid approved the Dubai Metro Gold Line and directed the immediate commencement of the project, with inauguration targeted for 9 September 2032.

According to Dubai Media Office, this will be Dubai’s largest transport project, with a total investment of AED 34 billion

🔸The Gold Line is a 42 km fully underground metro line, running at a depth of up to 40 metres, with 18 stations across 15 strategic locations in Dubai.

It is designed to serve 1.5 million people and support mobility for 55 major development projects currently under construction.

The official route starts at Al Ghubaiba and runs through key districts and developments including Mina Rashid, City Walk, Business Bay, Mohammed Bin Rashid City, Nad Al Sheba, Mohammed bin Rashid Gardens, Meydan, Al Barsha South, JVC, and ends at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

The Gold Line links:
✔ old Dubai
✔ emerging urban districts
✔ major real estate growth zones
✔ and the future national passenger rail system

That means this project is doing 4 jobs at once:
🔹mobility
🔹congestion relief
🔹urban integration
🔹economic value creation

Want to enter projects along the new metro line before prices start moving?

📲 Message us at Wide Plains — we’ll identify high-potential locations and build an entry strategy tailored to your investment goals.

The firms will develop a 480,000-square-foot mixed-use project in the Dubai Hills neighborhood, with Brookfield Properties serving as development and real estate manager.

The move reflects Brookfield’s «conviction in the long-term fundamentals of the region», according to Jad Ellawn, managing partner and regional head for Brookfield Middle East.

On 3 May 2026, President António José Seguro signed the new version of Portugal’s citizenship law.

Although the final wording still needs to be analysed once it is officially published in the Diário da República, it is expected that the law will come into force the day after publication.

Based on the information available so far, the reform is set to increase the minimum residence period for naturalisation from 5 to 10 years for most applicants.

For citizens of Portuguese‑speaking countries, a reduced period of 7 years is expected to apply.

At this stage, we are waiting for the official publication of the law to confirm all details and any transitional provisions that may protect pending or already eligible cases.

The UAE has launched Tourist Identity, a new system that allows tourists to open a digital bank account through the ADCB app within minutes of entering the country.

The account is issued on the basis of biometric identification and works as a temporary tourist banking product for the duration of the trip.

The initiative is part of the UAE’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on cash and accelerate the transition to a cashless economy.
