Brain Power and Age -
__________________________________
Scientists in Germany have cast doubt on a previously believed assumption that the processing speed of our brain starts to decline from the age of 20. Until now, it has been thought that our cognition level peaks when we are 20 and declines thereafter. Lead researcher doctor Mischa von Krause, of Heidelberg University, offered hope to older people who worry about increasing forgetfulness or reduced brain power. He said cognitive skills were still powerful at the age of 60 and do not diminish before then. He wrote: "Our finding is encouraging, as our results show that average levels in mental speed in contexts demanding fast and forced decisions do not decline until relatively late in the lifespan."

The study was based on data from over 1.1 million people, aged between 10 and 80 years old. The results show that our mental processing speed remains relatively constant until the age of 60, but does start to decline from our seventh decade. The researchers said people's mental processing speed actually increases in their 20s and remains high until 60. Dr von Krause said: "Until older adulthood, the speed of information processing in the task we studied barely changed." He added that older people do take longer to make decisions, but said this was because we become more cautious, and less impulsive and reckless as we age. The study could cast light on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

In learning a foreign language, a person must do more than memorize words and their meanings. One must also learn how to put those words together in the proper order. A paragraph in English, for example, cannot be translated straight across into Chinese, word for word. The characters must be rearranged according to Chinese thought patterns. Every language, including English, has its own sentence patterns.

In this lesson we will give special attention to English sentence patterns.

⏩Affirmative Statements

Up to half of adults suffer from mental illness
______________________________________________
Britain's National Health Service (NHS) suggests that up to half of adults have suffered from some form of mental illness at some stage in their life. Data from the Health Survey for England reveals that 25 per cent of all adults have been diagnosed with a mental health problem, while a further 18 per cent believe they have suffered from one but have not seen a doctor for diagnosis. Mental health expert Andy Bell said more needed to be done for people to get the help they need: Mr Bell said: "[These] figures are another wake-up call for the NHS to ensure that mental health support is available for people who need it when they need it. Timely access to effective mental health treatment saves lives."

Researchers questioned 5,000 adults about their experiences. They found that 26 per cent of people said they had received a mental health illness diagnosis. According to the survey, depression was the most common form of mental illness, with 19 per cent of people saying they had suffered from the condition. Women are more likely to suffer from mental health problems than men. Over 40 per cent of middle-aged women have been diagnosed with an illness at some point in their life. A spokeswoman from the mental health charity Sane bemoaned the survey's findings. She said: "These are shocking figures…because the scale of mental illness is already known but too often ignored."
