Afghanistan is facing escalating climate shocks that are compounding humanitarian needs across the country. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and recurrent floods are disrupting lives and livelihoods.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Above-average temperatures recorded across most provinces
๐Ÿ’ง Water scarcity and groundwater depletion affecting urban and rural areas
๐ŸŒพ Agriculture and livelihoods under severe stress
๐Ÿ‘ฅ Nearly 5 million people affected by climate-related hazards
๐Ÿ‘ฅ 79% of internal displacement linked to climate-related events

Climate-driven disasters are damaging homes, infrastructure, and farmland, while also driving displacement and food insecurity. With limited resources and fragile systems, communities are struggling to cope.

On 31 August 2025, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Eastern Afghanistan, devastating communities in Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, and Nuristan.

โค๏ธ 2,200+ lives lost
๐Ÿฉน 4,000+ injured
๐Ÿ  8,000+ homes destroyed
๐Ÿ‘ฅ 84,000+ people directly affected

Despite ongoing rescue efforts, thousands remain vulnerable, urgently needing shelter, food, clean water, and medical care. Local communities mobilized immediately, but the scale of the crisis calls for sustained international solidarity and support.

During late June and July 2025, Afghanistan experienced one of the largest waves of returnees from Iran in recent years, with tens of thousands arriving daily.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ 50% adult males | 17% adult females | 33% children under 18
๐Ÿ“Š Over 1.86 million people returned from Iran as of 13 August
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ 72% of returnees report not having adequate food

Many arrive with nothing but the clothes they wear, lacking food, shelter, clean water, and transport. Communities, NGOs, and local charities are providing critical support, yet needs far outpace available resources.

Key findings point to food, financial support, and housing as the most urgent priorities.

Between Febโ€“May 2025, Malan Ideal Impact conducted a nationwide safeguarding study in Afghanistan, highlighting both progress made and areas where gaps remain.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key insights include:
- About 1 in 5 organizations use policies not fully adapted to the Afghan context.
- Over a third of humanitarian staff have not yet received dedicated safeguarding training.
- Women and children remain among the most vulnerable groups requiring protection services.

The study underscores the importance of culturally responsive and accountable systems among others to ensure humanitarian aid remains safe, equitable, and protective for all.

In January 2025, the U.S. government ordered a 90-day halt to all new foreign aid, citing the need to realign assistance with national interests.

The consequences for Afghanistan are devastating and include:
๐Ÿฅ 422 clinics closed
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ 12.6 million people food insecure
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Millions lost access to health, education & protection services

This decision has deepened an already fragile humanitarian crisis, leaving millions without life-saving support.
