WHY DO ACCOUNTANTS NEED TO CONSIDER EVENTS AFTER YEAR-END?

The accounting period may have ended, but information received afterward can sometimes provide important evidence about conditions that existed at the reporting date.

This is where subsequent events become relevant.

An event occurring after the reporting period does not automatically mean the financial statements should be changed. The accounting treatment depends on the nature of the event and whether it provides evidence about conditions that existed at the reporting date or relates to conditions arising afterward.

For anyone preparing or reviewing financial statements, understanding this distinction is important.

It requires looking beyond the date printed on the financial statements and considering whether later information affects the financial reporting process.

Bridging The Gap introduces participants to the wider principles involved in preparing and reviewing financial information, helping them understand why accounting decisions sometimes require examination of events surrounding the reporting period.

WHY DO ACCOUNTING PERIODS MATTER?

A business operates continuously, but financial reporting divides that activity into specific periods, such as months, quarters or years.

This creates an important accounting question:

Which income and expenses belong in which period?

The answer affects the results reported by a business and helps ensure that financial statements present a more accurate picture of its performance during that period.

This is why concepts such as adjustments, accruals, prepayments and deferred revenue are important. They help account for income and expenses in the period to which they relate, even when the cash is received or paid at a different time.

Bridging The Gap is a practical accounting workshop designed to help participants build a stronger understanding of the principles behind everyday accounting work. Through guided instruction, examples and exercises, participants explore how transactions are recorded, reviewed and adjusted before financial information is presented.
