On January 19, the Asian Development Bank, in collaboration with the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of Armenia, organized a workshop titled “Discussion of the Transport Sector Climate Change Risk Assessment and Climate Adaptation Investment Program Project.” The workshop was attended by Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Kristine Ghalechyan; representatives of the Ministry, the Road Department Foundation, interested state bodies of the Republic of Armenia, and international partner organizations, as well as representatives of the Bank, led by Hiroyaki Yamaguchi, Senior Director for Transport at the Asian Development Bank.
In her welcoming remarks, Deputy Minister Kristine Ghalechyan noted that the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure has made a clear commitment to develop a climate risk management and adaptation program in the transport infrastructure sector, to increase the resilience of infrastructure not only at the level of individual roads but across the entire transport system.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that, with the support of the Asian Development Bank, the work carried out by experts from the companies GEORISK and MB Consulting makes it possible not only to assess geological and hydrological hazards and risks, but also to translate these results into concrete investment programs structured in line with the logic of public investment management and budgeting.
During the workshop, the assessments conducted under the program, mapped risks, and analyses were presented, focusing on the most vulnerable sections of the road network to floods, rockfalls, and landslides, as well as the economic analysis of climate adaptation measures in the transport sector, priority setting, and the development of a phased investment program.
