Last week, our school community launched Neurodiversity Week, not as a one-off event, but as a deliberate step toward meaningful, sustained inclusion.

Neurodiversity is not a trend or a checkbox. It is a recognition that differences in thinking, learning, and processing are natural and valuable. Our aim is to move beyond awareness into action: equipping parents with strategies, empowering students, and embedding inclusive practices into everyday teaching and learning.

The pressure to prepare children for kindergarten has led to unrealistic expectations for early writing. Many parents and teachers feel compelled to push handwriting before children are physically and cognitively ready. While some may naturally begin writing or reading early, this should not be the expectation—just as some infants walk at 9 months, it does not mean all should or can.

Young children often explore writing and drawing before and during kindergarten, but this should emerge through play-based experiences, not rigid worksheets. Storytelling, mark-making, and hands-on exploration naturally build literacy and fine motor foundations. Gross motor activities—like climbing, carrying, and balancing—strengthen the core, shoulders, and arms, providing the stability needed for controlled hand movements. Whole-body play develops the strength and coordination that make writing possible when the time is right.

Kindergarten readiness with regards to literacy should focus on language-rich interactions, a love for books and music, and playful experiences that build curiosity and confidence. Our featured image—a series of X-rays showing the dramatic difference in hand development from ages 2, 4, 7, and 10—illustrates why early writing expectations must align with physical development. Expecting preschoolers to write fluently is like expecting toddlers to run before they walk.

Let’s shift the conversation on what kindergarten readiness really looks like!

Join us for our upcoming webinar, What Is Kindergarten Readiness?, as we explore how to align early learning with child development—focusing on play-based, hands-on experiences that build foundational skills without unnecessary pressure.
