Catena Zapata We are a family winery with over 120 years of experience making wines of character that will age for generations to come.
(1689)

Bodega Catena Zapata is a historic family winery, currently managed by third and fourth generation vintners Nicolás and his daughter Laura Catena. Nicolás Catena Zapata is known as the man who revolutionized Argentine wine in the 1980’s, by focusing primarily on quality, and spearheading the re-entrance of Malbec – the French varietal that had been almost completely forgotten by the rest of the world – into the world of wine. The iconic family winery, a rock-clad pyramid nestled in the foothills of the Andes mountains, produces wine from five estate vineyards. Special lots within the family’s high altitude vineyards – Angélica, La Pirámide, Domingo, Adrianna and Angélica Sur – are the essence of the Catena Zapata wines.

Transplanted Old Vine Malbec, Gualtallary Alto, Mendoza, Argentina
“Some vineyards start declining in yields at 25 years, others at around 35. Some would say that this is the time when their true greatness of flavor starts. As long as they are planted in the right place and the vineyard is well cared for, vines can last over 100 years and produce extremely delicious wines.” - Dr. Laura Catena

— Dra. Laura Catena

Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2004 – 98+ POINTS
“Remarkably fragrant and complex aromatically, it offers up aromas of wood smoke, creosote, pepper, clove, black cherry, and blackberry. Made in a similar, elegant style, it is the most structured of the three single vineyard wines, needing a minimum of a decade of additional cellaring. It should easily prove to be a 25-40 year wine. It is an exceptional achievement in Malbec.

When all is said and done, Catena Zapata is the Argentina winery of reference – the standard of excellence for comparing all others. The brilliant, forward-thinking Nicolas Catena remains in charge, with his daughter, Laura, playing an increasingly large role.” - Jay S. Miller,The Wine Advocate

Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2004 – 98+ PUNTOS

Happy Cabernet Sauvignon Day! Cabernet Sauvignon is born from an accidental cross between vines, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, which happened centuries ago in France. Birth of Carbernet pays tribute to this variety and its journey from the Pyrenees to the Mendocinean Andes.

“A distinctive, brighter style of Cabernet, with heliotrope and spice notes framing the juicy black raspberry and cherry core. There’s a piercing graphite element to firm up the back end, with a slight grip of tannins, but the core flavors carry on.” - Aaron Romano, Wine Spectator.

- Aaron Romano, Wine Spectator.

At Catena Zapata, we use a range of fermentation vessels, including stainless steel tanks, concrete eggs, concrete tanks and spheres, terracotta amphorae, oak barrels, foudres, and roll fermentors. We select the material and format that best support the terroir’s flavor of each parcel. From fermentation through aging, each vessel influences oxygen exchange, texture, and extraction differently.

Argentina 2026: The Greatness Ramps Up.

“Argentina has shown the world its fighting spirit and finesse for decades on the football pitch. That same sense of determination to be great is found in its wines. The country is both blessed and challenged by its earthly location, in the shadows of the Andes Mountains in mostly desert-like conditions. That wine ever made its way here is a miracle. That so many of wines are exceptional in quality is a statement.” - Virginie Boone

- Virginie Boone

“The 2023 Malbec Nicasia Vineyard was 100% whole-cluster fermented and is incredibly refined, a complete wine even at its young age. The vineyard is one of the family’s most dynamic, at nearly 4,000-feet-elevation with ancient vines. Medium-bodied, it has an ethereal quality of lightness and freshness amidst spicy citrus and a texture of wet stone. The fruit is dark and brooding, more dark cherry and plum, with violet aromatics that go on for days. This is an incredibly impressive wine that should continue developing over the next 20-25 years, with an ideal drinking window of 2030-2045.” — Virginie Boone.

— Virginie Boone.

Preservation of Old Vines
Malbec from Angélica Vineyard. Planted in 1924. This Malbec vine has thrived for more than a century. Its naturally balanced growth produces medium-sized clusters with small berries, while roots extending up to 3 meters (10 feet) deep allow access to water and minerals beyond the reach of younger vines. The result is remarkable resilience and fruit of exceptional concentration.

Preservacion de vides Antiguas
