Married to an Argentine and planning to become a citizen? Here’s how it works in 2026.
Marriage gives you temporary residency — not citizenship. Under Decree 366/2025, you need 2 years of continuous legal residence in Argentina, without leaving the country, before you can apply. After that you apply in person, go through background checks and the oath, and receive your citizenship letter. Your DNI and passport come after.
One important update: in 2026, courts ruled against parts of that decree in individual cases. Which rules apply depends on your situation.
