Have you ever found a record saying your ancestor died in "Buenos Aires" — only to hit a massive brick wall? 🧱
STOP. You might be searching the wrong archive. 🛑
"Buenos Aires" has two completely different faces and they DO NOT share databases. Mixing them up will cost you years.
🗺️ THE BREAKDOWN:
🗄️ BUENOS AIRES CAPITAL (CABA)
The Entity: One centralized.
The Search: One master database for the entire city. Birth, marriage, death — all in one place.
🏛️ BUENOS AIRES PROVINCIA
The Entity: A decentralized network.
The Search: There IS a province-wide index, but it is fragmented. To get the actual certificate, you must know the exact municipality where it happened. Each municipio keeps its own books.
👥 THE LOCALS
Capital: Porteños
Provincia: Bonaerenses
🏛️ THE JURISDICTION
Capital: CABA — Autonomous City, a compact federal district (only 203 km²)
Provincia: A massive state surrounding it — roughly the size of Italy
⏳ THE HISTORICAL SHIFT
Capital: Detached from the province and federalized in 1880
Provincia: Had to build a new capital — La Plata — founded in 1882
⚠️ WHY THIS BREAKS YOUR TREE:
If your ancestor lived just one street outside CABA limits, in the Conurbano, their records will NEVER appear in the Capital's single database. You have to hunt the exact municipality in Provincia.
Have you fallen into this trap before? Tell me in the comments — CABA or Provincia? 👇
