It has been quite some time since I have been posting something.
But now - finally! - here I go again, making good on ma promise to show you the painting that came from my last stay in Djerba, Tunisia: "La jeune fille inconnue à l'hibiscus". Soon, you can buy this piece and others on my website!
I hope you like it. When I was drawing it the guy from the reception of the hotel came up to me and asked that I give her this tattoo on her chin because it is traditional. I was happy to follow his wish.
Stay tuned for more adventures!

Following the projects that I was hired for as an illustrator presenting now my most recent that I managed to participate in via the international conference ICAANE IN 2023 which took place two months prior to the start of the project: The .mainz was looking for an illustrator and here I was! It was my first job, officially taken on an archaeological excavation as an illustrator and I was super excited and grateful for the opportunity! I will make a separate post about my preparations for the project and what to expect if you decide to take me on as your illustrator on your archaeological campaign (and beyond). The campaign took place in August 2023 for about a month. I was there the entire time as the only one drawing the objects meaning ceramics, small finds, etc.. I had my own table as you can see in one of the pictures, and was very happy with the equipment provided by the Arbeitsbereich für Vorderasiatische Archäologie und Altorientalistik Universität Mainz. It being my very first official archaeological campaign, difficulties in the beginning were to be expected, which I luckily overcame quite quickly. I felt a deep sense of peace sitting behind my desk and not being part of the excavation, which as an archaeologist may surprise you, but it felt right being in that exact position. The professor and chief of excavation was quite satisfied with my drawings (which I enjoyed doing despite the 40° outside!!) and my general workflow! All in all I felt quite happy and completely in the right place, almost like I found my calling as an illustrator

My next opportunity for further training in imaging techniques was not long in coming:
During the summer semester in 2022 when I was in my Master, I took a class on 3D-Modelling, something I that fascinated me for some time. The seminar was very nice and well structured and I learned the basics on this technique. We had to keep a journal on our progress so I was able to track my steps well so that in the end this 3D model was the result, which you can admire better in my portfolio. The main challenges I was facing during the creation of the 3D model were to take enough pictures of the object and then to work through the many steps in the correct order. But I managed fine, had even some fun whilst creating the 3D model!

Beginning this account about my journey in archaeological illustration at the beginning: From january until march 2019 I worked for the Institute of Egyptology and Coptic Studies in Munich (https://www.aegyptologie.uni-muenchen.de/index.html). I was drawing outlines (umzeichnen) of several egyptian burials in northern Sudan, Sai Island. This was my first job as an archaeological illustrator so I was a little nervous and a billion thoughts were running through my head. When it was clear what my tasks were, I told myself that I could do this. And as I started I felt like time was standing still. Like meditation or like taking a mental break from my every day life. It felt like a hint of something very good, very pure. But at the time I guess I didn't decide yet what and who I wanted to be professionally. After this job I did not illustrate anything for some years, it just didn't happen. I had one million interests in my Bachelor and Master studies. But illustrating and images stayed with me during this time and through all my studies. And now I'm using it, showing it to you. Most people I showed my paintings may they be of more artistic or more scientific nature (or both) told me how beautiful they are. But judge for yourselves! Join me on my journey!
