Our knowledge about COVID-19 is evolving, and so is the language we use to describe it.

We learned that for speakers of Rohingya refugees in camps Bangladesh, the term “hand sanitizer” didn't previously exist. As it was strange and new, the earlier translation of the term was "aat duibolla fani ar sabunor bodoilla," which literally means “an alternative if water and soap are not available.”

Now it's become more familiar, a simplified phrase is used, "aat saaf goribar dabai": “medicine to cleanse hands.” This is our COVID-19 language guidance for Bangladesh: https://hubs.ly/H0PtRLy0

From his lakeside home at the foot of the Chittagong hills, TWB translator Futu is making a difference to his community. For many people in Bangladesh, floods, food insecurity, and water shortages are urgent concerns.

So Futu is sharing information about climate change to help Bangla and Rohingya speakers understand what actions they can take to prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disasters.
