China Puts Its First Deep-Water Drilling Ship into Service
has unveiled its first deep-water drilling ship, Meng Xiang (“Dream”), a groundbreaking vessel marking a major leap in ocean exploration. Built by the Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard and completed in late 2023, this 180-meter-long ship is the world’s only vessel capable of ultra-deep drilling at 11,000 meters. It combines cutting-edge technologies for scientific drilling, and exploration, and hydrate extraction, featuring onboard labs and a dynamic positioning system. With a range of 15,000 nautical miles and resilience against super typhoons, the Meng Xiang is set to redefine deep-sea research and reduce exploration costs. Its maiden voyage is scheduled for later this year.
As deep-sea mining capabilities expand, it’s crucial to monitor the potential environmental implications. Mining activities in fragile ocean ecosystems could disrupt marine biodiversity, impact carbon storage, and lead to long-term ecological changes.
