„Alles Walzer“ - Let the Waltz begin – is music in any Viennese’s ear.

We are happy to remember the bygone era of Court Balls, looking at Ball invitations for instance. They include a dress code, specifying a decolleté dress with jewels for the ladies, and uniform or White Tie for gentlemen who plan on dancing.

In need of suitable buttons for that White Tie? We offer rock crystal ones with a provenance tracing back to Emperor Karl I.

For more context, a caricatural paperwork by Alfred Gerstenbrand features an Imperial Court Ball in 1913.

And what would a ball be without some favors? Giveaways with the portrait of Franz Joseph I. seem to have been in great demand. And those with a sweet tooth could indulge in the so-called “Hofballzuckerl”, the court ball confectionary; their decoration also includes a portrait by the emperor.

The portraits of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth of Austria tell us the story of nobility and fame, of imperial lavishness and perfect posture; but also the tale of two young people shaped by forces outside their choosing.

Looking closer, one might find the shadow behind Sisi's smile or feel the premature seriousness behind the young emperor’s stance. Their human quality in these paintings equals their attraction.

Go with the “Flow” – or more precisely with this edition by German superstar Gerhard Richter.

The title refers to the flow of paint which the artist sprayed on the aluminum panel and fixed by placing a sheet of glass on top. The flow is thus stopped, any reworking impossible. The abstract works in the ‘Flow” series engage both the viewer and his surroundings through their mirrored surfaces.

If you’re a history aficionado, have a look at our Orders and Medals. Each piece tells a story of its own: about sunken empires, noble families or ongoing distinctions.

1. The Most Noble Order of the Garter is the highest and oldest order of chivalry in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1348 by King Edward III of England. The order’s emblem is a blue garter bearing the motto: “Honi soit qui mal y pense” (“Shame on him who thinks evil of it”)
2. The Order of the Iron Crown was a prestigious order of chivalry connected first to Napoleon and later to the Austrian Empire, where it became one of the highest honors. It was abolished in 1918.
3. The Order of Saint Peter is a dynastic family order of the House of Petrović-Njegoš, the royal dynasty of Montenegro.
4. The Order of the Golden Fleece is one of the most prestigious and ancient orders of chivalry in Europe. The order was founded in 1430 by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy.
5. The Order of the Redeemer (Greek: Τάγμα του Σωτήρος / Tágma tou Sotíros) is the highest decoration of Greece. The order was established in 1829 by King Otto I of Greece.

The Contemporary Week at Dorotheum began in dazzling fashion: scarcely any of the artworks in the Modern Art sale remained unsold. Strong international demand drove prices upward throughout the evening.

Among the evening’s top lots was Marino Marini’s Cavaliere. The bronze sculpture of a horse and rider, created in 1951 and representing one of the Italian artist’s lifelong philosophical themes, achieved an impressive €565,000.

Another highlight of the auction was without a doubt a pastel by Claude Monet. In various interpretations, as a play of light and color, Monet staged the Waterloo Bridge in London. A 1901 version of this motif in pastel fetched an outstanding €611,000.

Works of Viennese Modernism by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele were also highly sought after. Schiele’s 1910 watercolor Seated Girl with Red Hat realized €474,500.
Gino Severini’s “ Il Paradiso Terrestre” sold for €377,000.
