Virtual Research Talk 2025 – Showcasing Austria’s research strengths

More than 160 international researchers from 49 countries joined the very first Virtual Research Talk on September 15–16 to explore Austria’s research landscape and career opportunities.
Across inspiring keynotes and sessions on Artificial Intelligence, Life Sciences, funding programs and tax incentives, 17 speakers from leading research institutions and companies showed why Austria is a true innovation hotspot.

Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive:
“Thank you very much. It’s been such a rich and interesting session so far.”
“The sessions over the past two days have been excellent and extremely helpful.”
And the presenters were just as enthusiastic: “Right after the event, a professor from the U.S. reached out to me about joining our institute.”

Takeaway:
The Virtual Research Talk proved how attractive Austria is as a research and innovation location. With INVEST in AUSTRIA strengthening the research and business ecosystem and WORK in AUSTRIA connecting international talent with Austrian employers, the ABA continues to drive global collaboration.

The previous year showed once again that is an attractive location for research and innovation, for companies as well as for innovative startups and scaleups.🔥

We are happy to present the strong results of our consultations in our annual balance for 2023:

International companies invested around € 1.4 billion in Austria in the course of 325 company relocations and expansions. This is expected to create a total of 2.419 jobs. The majority of these companies operate in the ICT sector, followed by business-related services and wholesale.

On the road to e-mobility: highlights of the e-charging infrastructure in Austria 🔌 🌱

The country offers fertile ground and a highly networked infrastructure for investments in e-mobility:

▶️Total of 15,663 e-charging points in the entire e-charging network.
▶️Over 5,500 publicly accessible charging points in Austria and over 23,000 fully electric vehicles.
▶️In a European comparison, Austria ranks among the top 10 with 56 public charging points per 100,000 inhabitants. (Federal Ministry of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technollogy / figures from EAFO, VCÖ 04/2019).

An overview of key developments, goals and measures of the federal government:

2023: 111 million euros for the purchase of vehicles and charging infrastructure
2023: 10 million euros for fast-charging infrastructure in underserved areas (LADIN funding programme)
2025: 400 charging points for cars with at least 150 kW at at least 50 locations on the road network (Asfinag)
2030: Distance to the next fast charging station significantly less than 3 kilometres, even on the lower-ranking road network
2030: 1,500 charging points for cars with at least 150 kW per charging point at at least 100 locations on the road network - every 25 kilometres (Asfinag)
2035: 1,300 charging points for lorries with up to 1 MW per charging point on the road network (Asfinag)
