Among the highlights is Brett Whiteley’s San Gimignano, Tuscany 1989–1990, a magnificently vibrant and richly detailed Italian composition characterised by lightness, liquidity and easy spontaneity. The last major depiction of the Italian countryside by the artist, it represents the culmination of a subject that occupied a special place in his work for three decades.

In this luminous image, Whiteley transcribes the geography of the region, its undulating hills, city walls, towers, churches, cypress and olive trees, farmhouses, river and crops, bathed in a golden glow beneath a vivid blue sky.

Among the highlights is Rupert Bunny’s The Beautiful Morning (1908) (Lot 14, estimate $300,000–400,000), a refined and luminous composition from the artist’s celebrated Belle Époque period. Painted during his years in Paris, the work exemplifies Bunny’s mastery of light, colour and decorative harmony, presenting an elegant female figure poised within a carefully orchestrated interior.

Bathed in soft, filtered light, the composition reveals the artist’s remarkable ability to balance atmosphere with structure. The seated figure, absorbed in quiet contemplation, is rendered with a delicacy and sophistication that speaks to Bunny’s deep engagement with both French academic traditions and the modern decorative sensibility. At once intimate and composed, the painting reflects a moment of stillness, imbued with a quiet sense of poise and refinement.

We invite you to view this exceptional work, alongside the full collection, prior to this evening’s auction.

SYDNEY EXHIBITION CONTINUES
INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIAN ART IN FOCUS

27–28 April 2026 | 30 & 34 Queen Street, Woollahra | 10 am – 5 pm daily

Smith & Singer are pleased to advise that the Sydney Exhibition for our forthcoming sale of Important Australian & International Art continues, concluding Tuesday 28 April at 30 & 34 Queen Street, Woollahra, 10 am – 5 pm.

A distinguished group of works reflects the depth and complexity of contemporary Indigenous Australian art, led by a major painting by Lin Onus.

Lin Onus’ Carp in Reflective Pond 1995 (Lot 33, estimate $250,000–300,000, pictured) is a powerful and highly accomplished work from the artist’s celebrated series of reflective waterscapes, where technical virtuosity meets profound cultural meaning.

At once a study of light, surface and perception, the composition dissolves the boundary between what is seen and what is understood. Fish glide beneath the surface while reflections of sky and surrounding landscape hover above, creating a layered and shifting image that challenges the viewer’s sense of space and reality.

Central to Onus’s practice is the convergence of artistic traditions, combining Western painterly techniques with Indigenous knowledge systems. The fish, adorned with clan designs, move through a space that is both physical and symbolic, invoking deeper connections to identity, ancestry and Country.

Deceptively serene in its appearance, the work reveals itself as an intricate visual and conceptual construction, where reflection, refraction and cultural meaning operate simultaneously. It stands as one of the most compelling expressions of Onus’s mature practice and a significant statement within contemporary Australian art.

We invite you to experience this exceptional work in person, alongside the many other highlights in this landmark offering.

SCULPTURE IN FOCUS

25–28 April 2026 | 30 & 34 Queen Street, Woollahra | 10 am – 5 pm daily

Sculpture is a defining strength of Smith & Singer’s forthcoming Important Australian & International Art sale, with a tightly curated selection that reflects both the ambition and international scope of Australian sculptural practice.

Clement Meadmore’s Moreover 1996 (Lot 51, estimate $80,000–120,000, pictured) is a powerful and highly resolved example from one of Australia’s most internationally recognised sculptors. Distinguished by its sinuous form and dynamic presence, the work demonstrates Meadmore’s ability to activate space, guiding the eye through a continuous line that shifts and turns with remarkable fluidity.

Emerging from the artist’s mature period, Moreover reflects a decisive move away from rigid structure toward a more open and expressive language. Here, volume is set in motion across multiple axes, creating a sense of tension and release that engages both physically and visually with its surroundings.

Unmistakable in its originality and commanding in its form, the sculpture exemplifies Meadmore’s enduring contribution to post-war abstraction, where formal invention is inseparable from emotional intensity and spatial intelligence.

We invite you to experience this exceptional work in person, alongside the many other highlights in this landmark offering.

SYDNEY EXHIBITION CONTINUES
FEMALE ARTISTS IN FOCUS

26–28 April 2026 | 30 & 34 Queen Street, Woollahra | 10 am – 5 pm daily

Smith & Singer’s forthcoming Important Australian & International Art sale features exceptional representation by leading contemporary female artists, with Del Kathryn Barton’s lovers of all types 2023 standing as a major highlight.

Executed on a monumental scale (Lot 55, estimate $140,000–180,000, pictured), the composition exemplifies Barton’s singular visual language, where finely rendered figures, flora and fauna emerge from a densely worked field of colour and pattern. The result is a world that is at once sensual, intimate and expansive.

Barton’s remarkable ability to balance intricacy with clarity is evident throughout, as meticulously detailed forms are set against a fluid, atmospheric ground. Drawing on influences that range from Symbolist traditions to contemporary visual culture, she constructs a complex and deeply personal iconography that is both immediate and enduring.

Immersive in scale and compelling in its presence, lovers of all types stands as a significant example from the artist’s recent practice and a powerful statement within her celebrated oeuvre.

We invite you to experience this exceptional work in person, alongside the many other highlights in this landmark offering.

SCULPTURE IN FOCUS

25–28 April 2026 | 30 & 34 Queen Street, Woollahra | 10 am – 5 pm daily

Sculpture is a defining strength of Smith & Singer’s forthcoming Important Australian & International Art sale, with a tightly curated selection that reflects both the breadth and ambition of Australian sculptural practice.

Among the highlights is George Baldessin’s Pear (1971–1972 cast later) (Lot 59, estimate $180,000–220,000, pictured), a work of striking scale and presence that stands among the most iconic sculptural forms in Australian art. At once sensual and symbolic, the pear became a central motif in Baldessin’s practice, embodying themes of desire, the body and transformation through an increasingly abstracted visual language.

Monumental in its verticality and commanding in its form, Pear is a superb example from an edition of seven, and a rare opportunity to acquire one of the artist’s most recognisable and enduring sculptural achievements.
We invite you to experience this exceptional work in person, alongside the many other highlights in this landmark offering.
