A report by Sophos security researchers indicate that a new method of bypassing 2FA (Two Factor Authentication) has been kicking up as of late. This same method has been used successfully to compromise and do significant damage to giant YouTube channels and business alike.

With this method unwanted users have been able to steal session cookies from browsers on their target's system. Remote access isn't necessary as it can be done with a script attached to a seemingly innocent PDF from a seemingly innocent and trusted e-mail domain. The unsuspecting user only needs to attempt to open the file once.

How does a business defend itself from an attack as small as a phishing e-mail?

Google's Threat Analysis Group recommends scanning downloaded files with VirusTotal or other anti-malware software before running/opening the file. They're making security improvements to try and detect these attacks before they happen.
