Today 〰️
the first of May.

A new month, and a quiet reminder that our last in store pop-up was three years ago this week (can you believe it!) So much has been brewing creatively, but I always come back to this - finding beauty in the little things.

I’m (slowly) learning, pun intended, that a slower pace isn’t laziness. Slow is deliberate. Slow is intentionally choosing moments of pause. In a world that pushes for more and hurry and racing, slow is a resistance against the norm. Like a blank canvas, slowing makes space for creativity, for pondering…for becoming.

May this month be a gentle reminder to lean back into moments of slowing. Into your blank canvas, to your why and a reminder that it’s worth coming home to.

I believe that what we pay attention to grows. For better…or for worse. This week, I’ve found myself intentionally choosing to really pay attention to the small things that are good.

Ordinary moments that when noticed actually become a the sweetest gift.

And it turns out, they haven’t been hard to spot.

I held my dear friend’s newborn and felt all of those snuggly baby moments where you feel you’re entirely cocooned from the rest of the world. I watched my eldest make his little brother his first batch of crepes and it felt like seeing our Saturday morning pancake tradition start to be handed down. There were those in between moments that only school holiday brings - when work calls are interrupted with shouts of backyard cricket scores and bedtimes stretch later because no one was watching the clock.

There were definitely things I forgot this week, things I may have overlooked.

But, hopefully not the things that matter.

It’s been a year since we paused May Home Store, and while I’d love to say that I’ve spent that time quietly and gently - life had other plans. 🌿

Over the past year, I’ve been immersed in building brand and marketing for an incredible local Paediatric Therapy business, surrounded by a team of the most truly inspiring humans. It’s been a journey of learning and growth in my understanding of the child development space and Occupational Therapy, filled with moments that remind me of the power of connection and purpose in our work.

Still, there’s been a part of me that’s missed this space here. I’ve missed the simple joys of bringing fresh flowers through the doors of May Home Store in the Spring mornings, the beauty of our heartfelt conversations shared, and, of course, the delight of wrapping a little piece of warmth and care into each package - especially in the lead up to this beautiful Christmas season.

Pausing has made me realise that May Home Store wasn’t only a shop for me—it is reflection of everything I love about creating a sense of home and connection.

While our little shop space will always hold a special place in my heart, I wanted to reconnect, not as a store, but as a humble place to notice the good that is there in the world - for those who choose to see it. So, in this space moving forward, I’ll be sharing snippets of our dance of building a work and home life that is intentional and meaningful (albeit often a slightly more uncoordinated routine!), reflections on the beauty of home, and the small moments that bring joy, to me and I hope, to you.

I May (pun intended) look to bring back the website journal in coming weeks, mostly so we can all enjoy that granola recipe again!

Until then, thank you for being here - still. 😌 x Laura

Well friends, the time has come for us to say farewell to our sweet little May Home Store. After 10 years of running Once Was Lost and then nearly 3 years since we launched May Home Store we have made the challenging decision to close our business in the coming weeks.

For me, marking 10 years of owning and operating my own businesses as well as turning 40 early next year! (Yes, it’s happening), it just seemed like the right time to round out a decade of business ownership and prepare to enter a brand new chapter.

I launched May Home Store with the vision to encourage a slower more sustainable pace of living - a lesson I’m possibly just now fully learning and embracing myself.

I had hoped to create a sanctuary that people could enter into and instantly feel the outside world melt away. A place customers would be welcomed into as family and nurtured. Like a big deep breath in and out, I wanted to curate a space where you would feel calm and rested…and just maybe you’d be able to transfer some of that tranquility into your own home and lives too.

I never expected it to become so much more than a store. That it would bring so many people together, that I’d meet so many wonderful new friends and that it would grow me so much as a creative and as a Mum.

Right now for us, we are all in good health and while our business ventures are taking a pivot, I’ll continue to share here musings and encouragements from time to time.

Our final pop in date will be on Friday - Sunday 10th - 12th November and we’ll be doing an exceptional clearance sale, so come along for that and to spend time in our little space and share a cup of tea, I’d love that!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you so deeply for all your love, support and friendship. May Home Store simply would not have been possible without you.

Check your inbox tomorrow to be the first to know! I can’t wait to see you in store again, it’s going to be cosy with candles lit and feeling just like home (minus the toys needing to still be packed away from holiday craziness) 😅

A gentle reminder (to myself) to not overfill our mind’s plates. I’m a world that glorifies hurry, I’m finding myself increasingly drawn to that which is unrushed, slower, meaningful and authentic. I’m writing a little more on this in our newsletter this week, if you think that might be your cup of tea, head to our website, I’d love to have you and hopefully pop a little encouragement and lightness in your inbox! ☺️
