JK 2024 Barossa Valley Grenache 'Dad's Block'

93 Points, Halliday Wine Companion

Named after James' late father, “Dad's Block” comes from the centenarian Grenache vineyard surrounding the Barossa stone cottage where James grew up.

Nearly four decades later, he has returned to these same vines to create a wine that celebrates both this remarkable 1925-planted vineyard and the memories it holds.

Hand-harvested and matured in clay jarres, seasoned French oak and new French oak, the wine is crafted with patience and restraint, allowing the individuality of “Dad's Block” to shine through.

“Raspberry-flecked red plum and red and dark cherry fruits with underlying exotic spice, citrus blossom, cranberry, crushed herbs and wildflowers. There's an elasticity and suppleness to the palate, with fine tannins and a nice crunch to the acidity."

JK Blanc de Blancs, Adelaide Hills & Limestone Coast

An homage to Gill, James' mother, and their shared love of Champagne.

Crafted using the traditional method, this wine brings together Chardonnay from two exceptional cool-climate vineyards in the Adelaide Hills and Coonawara.

Matured on lees in clay amphoras before 30 months' bottle ageing, it is a wine shaped by earth, time, and restraint.

"The wine speaks of yellow citrus and a subtle yeast note. Rising scones and self-raising flour. Cashew butter adds a layer beneath a continuous line of lemon and white peach. Fruit is youthful, and its delicate bead will uplift your day."

A deeply personal collection of wines that reflects winemaker James Kalleske’s influences, experiences, and approach.

Made with an appreciation for wabi-sabi — the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in nature’s individuality and inherent character — these wines are crafted with patience and restraint. We hope this allows the character of each vineyard to speak for itself.

A frugal wine by design, served slightly cool.

Our Short Stories Barossa Valley Nouveau is drawn from the skins of our Grenache and Shiraz from our rosé production, with a portion of carbonic-macerated Alicante Bouschet and Viognier. Made creatively using grape skins that would otherwise be discarded, it’s bright and juicy, with notes of morello cherry and chocolate-dipped strawberries.

Enjoyed here at Begawan Biji in Ubud, a sustainably minded kitchen serving heritage rice and organic vegetables from their permaculture garden 🍷
